Human Trafficking in Conflict Zones: The Role of Peacekeepers in the Formation of Networks.Charles Anthony Smith & Brandon Miller-de la Cuesta - 2011 - Human Rights Review 12 (3):287-299.
While the effect of humanitarian intervention on the recurrence and intensity of armed conflict in a crisis zone has received significant scholarly attention, there has been comparatively less work on the negative externalities of introducing peacekeeping forces into conflict regions. This article demonstrates that large foreign forces create one such externality, namely a previously non-existent demand for human trafficking. Using Kosovo, Haiti, and Sierra Leone as case studies, we suggest that the injection of comparatively wealthy soldiers incentivizes the creation of (...)

    Safety, domination, and differential support.Charles Neil - 2019 - Synthese 198 (2):1139-1152.
In a recent paper “Safety, Sensitivity, and Differential Support” (Synthese, December 2017), Jose Zalabardo argues that (contra Sosa in Philos Perspect 33(13):141–153,1999) sensitivity can be differentially supported as the correct requirement for propositional knowledge. Zalabardo argues that safety fails to dominate sensitivity; specifically: some cases of knowledge failure can only be explained by sensitivity. In this paper, I resist Zalabardo’s conclusion that domination failure confers differential support for sensitivity. Specifically, I argue that counterexamples to sensitivity undermine differential support for sensitivity. (...)

Justice, Rights, and Toleration: Essays for Richard Vernon.Neil Hibbert, Charles Jones & Steven Lecce (eds.) - 2024 - Chicago: McGill-Queen's University Press.
The political theory of Richard Vernon has been a guiding light for students of politics for over five decades. From the situated ethics of shared citizenship to the normative character of individuals' connections to members of other societies and generations, Vernon has cleared a distinctive course in his contributions to the many complex dimensions of political morality. Justice, Rights, and Toleration centres on the core ideas that animate Vernon's engagement with the problems of political theory. Contributors to this volume - (...)

The New Individualism: The Emotional Costs of Globalization Revised Edition.Anthony Elliott & Prof Charles Lemert - 2009 - Routledge.
This is a new and revised edition of a book which has had a major impact upon the social sciences and public political debate. Anthony Elliott and Charles Lemert's THE NEW INDIVIDUALISM inspired readers with the dramatic suggestion that 'the reinvention craze' - from self-help and therapy culture to management restructurings and corporate downsizings - is central to a 'new individualism' sweeping the globe. Giving particular attention to the narratives of people seeking to define anew their lives in (...)

    Is Prudence Love?Charles J. O’Neil - 1974 - The Monist 58 (1):119-139.
This question takes us to the very center of the cooperation of the human powers in the act of choice. If prudence is wanting, that act of dominion is neither truly human nor truly praiseworthy. Unless there can be truly praiseworthy human excellence in the absence of love the answer to our question ought to be affirmative. Surely the affirmative answer is favored by I Cor. 13:13 and John 14:23. Is the dominion then still human? A negative answer to the (...)

    Epithelial apoptosis.Anthony Metcalfe & Charles Streuli - 1997 - Bioessays 19 (8):711-720.
Apoptosis is an essential part of the normal cellular phenotype repertoire. In the absence of appropriate survival factors, apoptosis is activated through specific signalling cassettes. Epithelia form distinctive three‐dimensional cohesive structures that depend on adhesive interactions in order for these tissues to carry out their specialised roles, such as secretion and reproduction. The cellular programme that triggers apoptosis in epithelial cells has not yet been shown to differ from that in other cell types, yet the unique characteristics of epithelia endow (...)

The ABC of scholastic philosophy.Anthony Charles Cotter - 1946 - Weston, Mass.,: The Weston college press.
It is not a summary of philosophical problems, which the beginner cannot digest and which may engender in him a spirit of skepticism. For a like reason Cotter does not give an outline of the history of philosophy with the same problems arranged by periods. Instead, he confined himself to a few important data on the principal philosophers of past ages, and the author tried to sketch the intellectual equipment with which the student is supposed to begin philosophy.

Roughly eight years ago we met in Manhattan with Nick Phillipson to plan a new journal to be launched by Cambridge University Press. Two Americans who knew each and had worked together well, and who were largely in agreement about what MIH should accomplish. We were well aware of the quality of Nick's scholarship, of course, and had heard through the transatlantic grapevine that he was a great colleague. Still, we were more than a little apprehensive. What if Nick had (...)

The purpose of this paper is to use neuroscientific evidence to address the philosophical issue of intertheoretic reduction. In particular, we present a literature review and a new experiment to show that the reduction of cognitive psychology to neuroscience is implausible. To make this case, we look at research using object exploration, an important experimental paradigm in neuroscience, behavioral genetics and psychopharmacology. We show that a good deal of object exploration research is potentially confounded precisely because it assumes that psychological (...)

Knowing God, knowing emptiness: an epistemological exploration of Bernard Lonergan, Karl Rahner and Nāgārjuna.John Neil Charles Robinson - 2022 - Bristol, CT: Equinox Publishing.
Knowing God, Knowing Emptiness examines the viability of the epistemology proposed by Bernard Lonergan in his seminal work Insight, particularly with regard to its possible application in the field of interreligious dialogue. It applies Lonergan's epistemological categories to Karl Rahner's Foundations of Christian Faith, and Nāgārjuna's Mūlamadhyamakakārikā.
