This book proposes a reading of Dionysius the Areopagite's longest and most important treatise 'On the Divine Names' from a philosophical point of view, rather than from a theological point of view which dominates the secondary literature. At the same time, it can serve as an introduction to the entire philosophy of Dionysius.

To most interpreters, the case seems to be clear: Plotinus identifies matter and evil, as he bluntly states in Enn. 1.8[51] that 'last matter' is 'evil', and even 'evil itself'. In this paper, I challenge this view: how and why should Plotinus have thought of matter, the sense-making ἔσχατον of his derivational ontology from the One and Good, evil? A rational reconstruction of Plotinus's tenets should neither accept the paradox that evil comes from Good, nor shirk the arduous task of (...) interpreting Plotinus's texts on evil as a fitting part of his philosophy on the whole. Therefore, I suggest a reading of evil in Plotinus as the outcome of an incongruent interaction of matter and soul, maintaining simultaneously that neither soul nor matter are to be considered as bad or evil. When Plotinus calls matter evil, he does so metonymically denoting matter's totally passive potentiality as perceived by the toiling soul trying to act upon it as a form-bringer. As so often, Plotinus is speaking quoad nos here rather than referring to 'matter per se' (for Plotinus, somewhat of an oxymoron) which, as mere potentiality (and nothing else) is not nor can be evil. In short: matter is no more evil than the melancholy evening sky is melancholy -- not in itself (for it isn't), but as to its impression on us who contemplate it. As I buttress this view, it will also become clear that matter cannot tritely be considered to be the αὐτὸ κακόν as a prima facie-reading of Enn. 1.8[51] might powerfully suggest, but that the αὐτὸ κακόν, far from being a principle of its own, has to be interpreted within the dynamics of Plotinus's philosophical thinking as a unique, though numerously applicable flaw-pattern for all the single κακά (hence the Platonic αὐτό). To conclude, I shall offer a short outlook on the consistency of this interpretation with Plotinus's teaching on the soul and with the further Neoplatonic development of the doctrine of evil. Résumé Le titre évoque le nouveau paysage créé sur le port de Hambourg par l’action intitulée Park Fiction. C’est une action pas plus extraordinaire que celle des skaters qui se sont mis un jour à patiner n’importe où librement. L’art ne se contente pas de faire voir le monde d’un autre point de vue, il le fait fonctionner différemment. À Hambourg, une action continue d’animation, d’exposition, d’agit-prop, menée avec humour, a fini par convaincre la municipalité que les habitants avaient vraiment (...) besoin d’un jardin sur le port, et qu’il fallait le réaliser selon les plans qu’ils avaient projetés. Pas tout à fait, car elle ne comprend pas pourquoi il faudrait constituer une archive de cette action, ouverte au public. En fait elle en nie la dimension artistique et ne garde que le fonctionnel. Mais le Park Fiction est convoité par les investisseurs, dont il a jusqu’à présent déjoué les assauts en développant des activités internationales. (shrink)

Desde hace más de un siglo, la filosofía de Dionisio el Areopagita ha sido menospreciada y subestimada como poco original debido a su obvia dependencia del pensamiento de Proclo. El presente artículo se propone corregir este punto de vista denigrante y re-evaluar el sistema neoplatónico presentado por Dionisio en el tratado De divinis nominibus. Al abstenerse metódicamente de leer a Dionisio como mero plagiado de Proclo, esta interpretación de los escritos dionisianos nos presenta su filosofía como la elaboración original y (...) profunda de una teo-ontología que -en las palabras del poeta Samuel T. Coleridge- "emprende la tarea de explicar la totalidad de las cosas estrictamente a través de un análisis de la autoconciencia, y a la vez construye en la mente un entero cosmos sirviéndose de nada más que de elementos proporcionados por la mente misma". ZusammenfassungDer Krankheitsbegriff soll aus der Perspektive der klinischen Medizin am Beispiel der Radioonkologie dargestellt werden. Als theoretisches Modell zum ganzheitlichen Verständnis wird zunächst der interaktive Dualismus eingeführt. Danach wird die Interaktion zwischen Geist und Körper als wesentlich angesehen, um den Patienten mit Würde und Mitgefühl zu behandeln. Auch die Strahlentherapie erfordert nach ihrem Selbstverständnis einen ganzheitlichen Zugang zum Patienten. Demgegenüber zeigt die Analyse der aktuellen radioonkologischen Literatur einen reduktionistischen Krankheitsbegriff, der in erster Linie objektive Kriterien aus ärztlicher Sicht zur Definition (...) von Krankheit heranzieht. Im Dialog könnten stattdessen Arzt und Patient einen gemeinsamen Krankheitsbegriff entwickeln; hierbei finden im Sinne des interaktiven Dualismus gleichermaßen objektive ärztliche wie subjektive patientenbezogene Kriterien Berücksichtigung. Grenzen dieses neuen Konzepts erfordern eine besondere Beachtung und werden zuletzt erläutert. (shrink)

In this paper I shall argue that Proclus' criticism of Plotinus in De malorum subsistentia 31,5-21 is not entirely accurate, if we take into account Plotinus' theory of contraries as explained in Enn. I.8.6. For while Proclus thinks it impossible that anything could ever produce its contrary out of itself , Plotinus seems to propose that gradual ontological derivation from the first Principle will lessen the chain of being inevitably to the zero point of non-being . Non-being, however, is contrary (...) to the first Principle in a more radical way than the one Proclus thought of when he stated that absolute Good could never be the cause of Evil: according to Plotinus' interpretation, Good and Evil as well as being and non-being are contraries insofar they have no common substratum and do not share a common gšnoj. I shall try to plausibly explain this prima facie somewhat awkward notion of contrariety found in Plotinus by adducing analogies to numerical series, taking a recent paper by Dominic O'Meara as a starting point for the discussion. This is a phrase that alludes to a new landscape created at Hamburg’s port through an action entitled Park Fiction. It is an action not that much more extraordinary than the action of skaters who set out one day to go skating, freely. Anywhere. Art is not about simply making the world look at itself from a different point of view, but to make it be used in a different way. In Hamburg an ongoing action of animation, exhibition, agit-prop, fuelled (...) by humour, has ended up convinvcing the local council that the inhabitants have a real need for a garden by the port, and that they are bound to realise this according to the plans they have put forward. Though not entirely, because the council does not understand why it is necessary to make an archive of this action, that is open to the public. In fact, the council denies the artistic dimension of the project, and retains only that which is functional. But Park Fiction is being now sought-after by investors, whose advances they have so far eluded through the development of international activities. (shrink)

The key to understanding Dionysius is the methodical acceptance of the literary fiction involved in reading an author who tries to recreate the immediateness of the first encounter of pagan wisdom and Christian doctrine. Dionysius’s method consists of the presentation of a Platonic ontology by way of biblical theonyms. These theonyms express whatever we can grasp of God by His self-communication toward us, yet they ultimately cannot reveal Him as He is. It is rewarding to compare biblical theonym and author’s (...) allonym at this point: the allonym “Dionysius Areopagita” expresses how the author wants to be read and received but not who he really is. Th us the Dionysian writings present themselves as if they were the communication of an early Christian author whose objective it is to proclaim the “unknown God” to philosophically educated Greeks, naming Him with the biblical theonyms and explaining them in a Platonic way.
