Consumer surveys repeatedly suggest that corporate social responsibility and products’ social, environmental, or ethical attributes enhance consumers’ purchase intentions. The realization that CSR still has only a minor impact on consumers’ actual purchase decisions thus represents a puzzling paradox. Whereas prior literature on consumer decision making provides valuable insights into the factors that impede or facilitate consumers’ socially responsible consumption decisions, such elements may be only the tip of the iceberg. To gain a fuller understanding of the CSR–consumer paradox, this (...) study proposes investigating the phenomenon through additional theoretical lenses, namely, a clinical psychology, an evolutionary psychology/biology, a social psychology, and an economic and economic psychology lens. This article traces a normative turn between the middle of the 1940s and the early 1950s reflected in the reformulation, interpretation, and use of rational choice theories at the Cowles Commission for Research in Economics. This turn is paralleled by a transition from Jacob Marschak’s to Tjalling Koopmans’s research program. While rational choice theories initially raised high hopes that they would serve as empirical accounts to inform testable hypotheses about economic regularities, they became increasingly modified and interpreted as normative approaches (...) offering behavioral recommendations for individual agents, organizations, government, and teams. The predefined elements constitutive of these accounts, inspired by simple rules of logic, were now meant to represent the basic demands of rationality and theories of rational decision making specified rules of conduct that were meant to shape rather than explain behavior. Natural forms, often characterized by irregularity and roughness, have a unique complexity that exhibit self-similarity across different spatial scales or levels of magnification. Our visual system is remarkably efficient in the processing of natural scenes and tuned to the multi-scale, fractal-like properties they possess. The fractal-like scaling characteristics are ubiquitous in many physical and biological domains, with recent research also highlighting their importance in aesthetic perception, particularly in the visual and, to some extent, auditory modalities. Given the multitude of fractal-like (...) scaling manifestations, we explore potential commonalities in the way they might affect aesthetic preference within and across different physical and sensory domains. We use a range of visual and tactile stimuli to explore the equivalence of fractal-scaling effects on aesthetic preferences within and across visual and tactile modalities. Our results suggest that, despite some superficial differences, the underlying dimensional structure mediating the preference across the two domains is remarkably similar. The qualitative nature of this dimensional structure as well as suggestions for future research are discussed. (shrink)

This chapter first outlines the three main phases of the development of the single market, together with the impetus and philosophy underpinning it. The idea behind the original European Economic Community (EEC) Treaty was simple: barriers to free movement of goods, persons, services, and capital would be removed through the use of treaty provisions that prohibited obstacles to free movement. One aspects of the single market have been reformed following the crisis, notably financial services. The legislature is increasingly moving towards (...) the use of regulations, rather than directives, to ensure greater uniformity and maximum as opposed to minimum harmonization to remove the possibility of national variation. The chapter then examines some of the challenges facing the single market. The challenges essentially concern questions of competence, sovereignty and effectiveness. There are two main approaches to attaining a common market, namely decentralized model and centralized model. (shrink)

We discuss the latent variables construct, particularly in regard to the following: that latent variables are considered as the sole explanatory factor of a disorder; that pragmatic concerns are ignored; and that the relationship of these variables to biological markers is not addressed. Further, we comment on the relationship between bridge symptoms and causality, and discuss the proposal in relationship to other constructs (endophenotypes, connectionist-inspired networks).

This essay argues that Catholic (magisterial) social teaching's division of ethics into public and private creates a structural lacuna which makes it almost impossible to envision a truly just situation for migrant domestic careworkers (MDCs) within the current horizon of Catholic social thought. Drawing on a variety of sociological studies, I conclude that it is easy for MDCs to “disappear” between two countries, two families, and, finally, two sets of ethical norms. If the magisterium genuinely wishes Catholic ethicists to address (...) the plight of these migrant women, normative Catholic social teaching must pay more attention to household sociological realities and more fully absorb the feminist critique of the sharp line between the public and the private, between care and paid work. Faced with the present migrant crisis and the dismal record of Europe in protecting vulnerable refugees’ and migrants’ rights, what could be the view of the moral philosopher? The contrast between the principles enshrined in the European Charter of Fundamental Rights and the reality of present policies is shocking, but more scrutiny will show that it is the result of a larger trend towards an understanding of freedom mostly in economic terms, at a time when economists such as Amartya Sen (...) have revised their approach to economic growth and prosperity, noting the central role played by a much richer conception of freedom. The paper will scrutinize these inconsistencies and the conception of the person from which they derive and will provide an alternative and more coherent moral vision that could strengthen the legitimacy of the European Charter, at a time of growing dissatisfaction and so‐called democratic deficit. Such a vision could help reconnect the Charter with a conception of the human person as in need not solely of passive legal protection, but also of active promotion of her self‐respect and capabilities, and of her aspiration to a valuable life. In this paper the nature and the role of Rawls's idea of a “free public reason” are examined with an emphasis on the divide between the private and the public spheres, a divide which is the hallmark of a liberal democracy. Criticisms from both the so‐called Continental tradition and the Communitarian opponents to liberalism insist on the ineffectiveness of such a conception, on its inability to establish a political consensus on democracy. But it would be a mistake to see (...) a contractarian theory of justice, such as Rawls's justice as fairness, as grounding the social contract in a public use of reason. Such a contract would indeed be susceptible to endless conflicts and renegotiations and would never achieve consensus. Therefore, a distinction must be made between the values of justice that are present in and through the “original” contractual position and the that regulate the public sphere and guarantee its stability. This dissertation explains Audre Lorde's theoretical work as a pedagogical model, and particularly as foundational for an exploration of photomontage or image/text. Lorde's poetry enacts her theory; she uses her fascination with difference formally, structurally, and rhetorically. My conjecture is that Lorde's practice posits an epistemology based on her thoroughgoing investigation of difference on many levels. She is fascinated by difference, contradiction, dialectic. Her method significantly involves constant comparison and juxtaposition or repositioning of images; processes which tend to be associated (...) with allegorical procedures and montage practice. ;Lorde's work helps illuminate the following questions central to the pedagogy, of image/text or photomontage, toward which I speculate. How can we find forms that move us from our emotions and or something that is internal, powerfully and meaningfully out among others and back and how can we use forms or representation to intervene in our communities and society toward more complex understandings and just practices? ;How can we move students from production to analysis; from developing their own idea, even as a collective, to broader analysis. How do we ask the questions that move us forward and that keep us productive and critical, as part of a dialogue or dialectical practice allowing us to see differently? How do we resist "closure" without committing to aimless relativism? How do we open improvisational space where things can happen, but where we also make meaning of and judgments about what happens or what doesn't; and about where we need to move and why? ;The work here is toward a pedagogy which holds images in conversation, realizing that images and conversations move so we need to make a practice of scrutiny. The pedagogy toward which I speculate examines how our culture/society works in us through images, too often unexamined. My conjecture is that there are methods of dialogue which produce questions out of difference, comparison, and contradiction; and by way of production of imagery, and forms. Specifically, production of visual imagery can be used powerfully in this process. (shrink)

In the care of patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC), some ethical difficulties stem from the challenges of accurate diagnosis and the uncertainty of prognosis. Current neuroimaging research on these disorders could eventually improve the accuracy of diagnoses and prognoses and therefore change the context of end-of-life decision making. However, the perspective of healthcare professionals on these disorders remains poorly understood and may constitute an obstacle to the integration of research. We conducted a qualitative study involving healthcare professionals from an (...) acute care university medical center. A short questionnaire captured demographic data as well as the experience of participants with DOC patients. A semi-structured interview was used to explore attitudes toward ethical issues identified in a previous literature review. Qualitative content analysis of interviews was conducted with the NVivo software. Accurate diagnosis among DOC is often regarded as a challenge, but this was generally not the case for our participants because most reported high confidence in DOC diagnoses. However, participants reported struggling with prognosis, especially because of its essential role for end-of-life decision making and communication with families. Variability of opinion between healthcare professionals was reported and identified by some as a minor issue while others stressed how families struggle with different medical opinions. End-of-life decision making encompassed a large proportion of ethical challenges in these patients, and the removal of artificial nutrition and hydration created significant discomfort in a minority of participants. The concept of futility was subject to wide-ranging understandings with both favorable and unfavorable opinions. Our data suggest that to ensure the incorporation of new evidence-based advances, attention should be directed to the real-world practices and challenges of accurate diagnosis and prognosis. Given pervasive challenges in end-of-life care, we recommend improved training of healthcare professionals in the care of patients with DOC, particularly in end-of life care, understanding the context of decision making, and determining how to optimally integrate new neuroscience research on the care of patients with DOC. Saving Animals is a hands-on guide for young people of all ages to help animals. With stories of activists from ages six to 22 years old, this book will inspire and educate all readers about the lives of animals and how we can end abuse and exploitation.

We examined maternal competition, an unexplored form of competition between women. Given women’s high investment in offspring and mothers’ key role in shaping their reproductive, social, and cultural success as adults, we might expect to see maternal competition between women as well as mate competition. Predictions about the effect of maternal characteristics (age, relationship status, educational background, number of children, investment in the mothering role) and child variables (age, sex) were drawn from evolutionary theory and sociological research. Mothers of primary (...) school children (in two samples: N = 210 and 169) completed a series of questionnaires. A novel nine-item measure of maternal competitive behavior (MCQ) and two subscales assessing Covert (MCQ-C) and Face-to-Face (MCQ-FF) forms of competition were developed using confirmatory factor analysis. Competitiveness (MCQ score) was predicted by maternal investment, single motherhood, fewer children, and (marginally) child’s older age. The effect of single motherhood (but not other predictors) was partially mediated by greater maternal investment. In response to a scenario of their child underperforming relative to their peers, a mother’s competitive distress was a positive function of the importance she ascribed to their success and her estimation of her child’s ability. Her competitive distress was highly correlated with the distress she attributed to a female friend, hinting at bidirectional dyadic effects. Qualitative responses indicated that nonspecific bragging and boasting about academic achievements were the most common irritants. Although 40% of women were angered or annoyed by such comments, less than 5% endorsed a direct hostile response. Instead, competitive mothers were conversationally shunned and rejected as friends. We suggest that the interdependence of mothers based on reciprocal childcare has supported a culture of egalitarianism that is violated by explicit competitiveness. (shrink)

At his death in 1992, the eminent philosopher, critic, and theorist Louis Marin left, in addition to a dozen influential books, a corpus of some three hundred articles and essays published in journals and anthologies. A collection of twenty-two essays that appeared between 1971 and 1992, this book interrogates the theory and practice of representation as it is carried out by both linguistic and graphic signs, and thus the complex relation between language and image, between perception and conception. The essays (...) are grouped in four parts that reflect the continuity and coherence of Marin's interests in semiology, narrative, visuality, and painting. The interdisciplinary horizon of the book draws on multiple scholarly resources—the cultural history of the seventeenth century, the philosophy of language, the tools of discourse analysis, the history of art and aesthetics, the analysis of reception—to address a stunning diversity of subjects ranging from historical painting through cartography to the processes of deciphering texts, interpreting stories, and _reading_ images. Throughout the essays, Marin's reflection on representation is supported and deepened by his brilliant exegesis of graphic art. His analysis of works by Caravaggio, Philippe de Champaigne, Le Brun, and Poussin, among others, provides the armature that allows him to describe both the structural logic of representation and the intricate processes of production and reception that make it dynamic and unstable. This paper probes theories of justice underpinning the concept of equity to deconstruct the term and ascertain how best to equitably support refugee and asylum-seeking youth in U.S. schools. Building upon theories posited by John Rawls, Michael Sandel, and Amartya Sen, the paper aims to extend beyond ideal theory into a theoretical framework of equity with operationalizing potential. Recognizing refugee and asylum-seeking youth as part of the U.S. social contract and therefore bound to government support, the paper represents that equitable (...) education for these young people in our globalized world is essential from both a human rights and economic perspective. Such equitable education will only be achieved when universal minimum standards are offered to everyone and made inclusive, so that all are invited to fully participate as culturally respected learners and knowledge producers in academic spaces. A partir de réflexions qui mettent en perspective différentes approches philosophiques, cet ouvrage présente une vision prospective de la philosophie - vision pensée sous l'horizon de la philosophie grecque. La philosophie ne peut, semble t-il, se développer indépendamment de toute référence grecque, c'est-à-dire aussi de ce qui constitue son origine. L'enjeu est de tracer les contours d'une philosophie à venir à partir d'une réflexion sur une contribution possible ou nécessaire de la philosophie grecque. On s'interroge sur le sens, les significations (...) et la pertinence de la philosophie grecque aujourd'hui : y a-t-il une nécessité à revenir aux origines de la philosophie, à son premier moment grec? Quelle serait la nature d'une telle nécessité? En quoi la philosophie grecque pourrait-elle constituer une référence obligée et comment penser cette référence? Philosophie de la culture grecque est un ouvrage qui rassemble une cinquantaine de textes de différentes origines. Cet ouvrage s’inscrit dans le prolongement des travaux d’E. Moutsopoulos, parmi lesquels La musique dans l’œuvre de Platon, La philosophie de la musique dans la dramaturgie antique. Formation et structure ou encore Les structures de l’imaginaire dans la philosophie de Proclus. L’unité de l’ouvrage se dégage au terme d’un parcours où se découvre progressivement sa logique interne. Les grands moments, c’est-à-dire aussi les grandes (...) figures, de la philosophie grecque depuis ses origines jusqu’au XXe siècle y sont présentés. L’idée directrice est de montrer le rayonnement de la pensée grecque dans l’histoire de l’Occident et d’en exposer les temps forts. L’influence décisive de la Grèce dans le passé, sous le nom d’humanisme, peut et doit être prolongée, selon notre auteur, dans l’Europe d’aujourd’hui. Composé de sept parties, l’ouvrage est centré sur ces deux grandes figures que sont Platon et Aristote, autour et à partir desquelles la philosophie s’est développée. L’enjeu de l’ouvrage est dans son titre même, puisqu’il s’agit de la possibilité d’une philosophie de la culture grecque. (shrink)
