Despite its profound importance for individuals and populations, children’s mental health remains under-appreciated as a public policy priority, to a degree that violates children’s rights. Using a working definition of policymaking as collective ethical decision-making for the one and the many, we elaborate by describing an individual child’s story and reviewing the pertinent population health research evidence. We then outline three central public health ethical challenges: addressing the high prevalence and impact of childhood mental disorders; addressing the avoidable social adversities (...) that underlie many childhood mental disorders; and addressing stark shortfalls in prevention and treatment services for children. We end with discussing opportunities for progress, including addressing the attendant children’s rights issues. (shrink)

Dans cet article, nous proposons d’examiner les choix de composition et d’écriture opérés par Émilie du Châtelet dans sa traduction française des Principia Mathematica d’Isaac Newton. En particulier, nous nous interrogeons sur la coexistence au sein de cette dernière de deux textes de style mathématique différent que constituent d’une part la traduction proprement dite des démonstrations géométriques des Principia, et d’autre part la « solution analytique » jointe au deuxième tome des Principes mathématiques de la philosophie naturelle. Dans la mesure (...) où l’ensemble des démonstrations géométriques du texte newtonien sont irréductibles à toute forme de « traduction » analytique complète, nous suggérons que la mise en regard du texte newtonien avec sa « Solution analytique » proposée par du Châtelet procède d’une réflexion singulière de sa part sur les principes régissant la philosophie naturelle. How might the idea of recognition offer a fresh slant on contemporary women’s writing? In this essay, we bring theories of recognition into dialogue with two literary works: Chris Kraus’s widely reviewed memoir I Love Dick and The Other Woman by the well-regarded Swedish novelist Therese Bohman. Our analysis focuses on recognition within the texts as well as its relevance to relations between texts and readers. We seek to clarify how attitudes to heterosexual love, feminism and same-sex identification are entangled (...) and the broader implications of such entanglements. We are interested in how the protagonists engage the world as readers and the role of literature in shaping their identifications and attachments. Yet, a comparative analysis can also bring to light how a feminist habitus is predicated on class and education, suggesting that these two texts may invite rather different experiences of recognition. This article deals with education in the context of the information society, aims to identify challenges that fall on the educational field, especially with regard to the instrumentalization of education by capital, the implications that affect the training and teaching performance, as well as the influences of expansion information and communication technologies, reverberating in the current ways of conceiving educational processes. These challenges are evidenced in the light of Critical Theory, more specifically supported in the conceptual categories Bildung and Halbbildung (...) by Adorno, in the essay Theory of Semiculture. It comprises a bibliographic research, of an analytical character, which made it possible to dialogue with scholars from Theodor Adorno and from Critical Theory, defending the discussions around institutionalized semiformation and the failure of training in the face of the interferences of the cultural industry, as a way to resist oppressive forces and standardization requirements imposed by the current order. Believes that education in the information society is, in many respects, linked to neoliberal economic and ideological interests, resulting in semitraining, compromising the true mission of school education and of human training, resulting in semi-training, devaluation and emptying of importance of the educational institutions and your professionals. It concludes that utilitarian and pragmatic education contributes to the permanence of a social arrangement that leads subjects to critical inability, loss of identity, submission, insensitivity towards themselves and others, regression and limitation of human potential, that once alienated prevents the break with the processes of manipulation and standardization of behaviors that lead to barbarism. Passionné par les affaires du monde –il est docteur en droit et diplomate – tout comme par celles de l'esprit – c'est un esprit féru de mathématiques, de physique, de logique, d'histoire, voire de géologie –, Leibniz pratique la philosophie en homme qui veut tout comprendre, tout concilier, élaborant, au fil de ses découvertes, d'ambitieuses synthèses. Ce livre permet d'entrer dans cette saga du savoir, pour en repérer les enjeux théologiques, scientifiques et philosophiques.

Leibniz emploie dans divers textes l’adjectif aveugle pour caractériser une forme de pensée ou de connaissance. Il est parfois associé à l’adjectif symbolique : le célèbre texte de 1684, « Meditationes de cognitione, veritate et ideis », introduit ainsi la cogitatio caeca vel symbolica comme un des types de connaissance dont le texte entreprend d’établir méthodiquement la classification. C’est généralement la nature symbolique de cette connaissance qui a retenu l’attention et a été perçue comme un élément déterminant de compréhension de (...) la théorie leibnizienne de la connaissance reposant sur la médiation de signes soumis à des règles de composition. À l’arrière-plan se dessinent alors les divers projets leibniziens de caractéristique universelle. C’est dans ce cadre que l’on analyse dès lors la distinction leibnizienne opérée entre la connaissance aveugle ou symbolique, intrinsèquement médiate, et la connaissance intuitive, relevant d’une forme de vision immédiate de ses objets. Mais comment interpréter exactement le rapport à l’acte de vision? N’est-il pas encore requis dans la conception leibnizienne de la connaissance par signes? Autrement dit, cette dernière peut-elle se déployer sans l’acte effectif de voir? Si tel est le cas, il semble qu’il faille réinterroger sa nature « aveugle », ce qui peut nous éclairer sur les conditions véritables de son effectuation, et, ipso facto, sur certaines propriétés cognitives attribuées à la vue. "Nicolas Malebranche (1638-1715), philosophe, théologien et scientifique français, a joui d'une influence considérable, avant que la distance entre la philosophie et la spiritualité chrétienne ne se creuse. Marquée par la double leçon de saint Augustin et de Descartes, son oeuvre vise à concilier foi et raison, à articuler Providence divine, mécanisme naturel et liberté humaine. Cet effort de synthèse donne naissance à une métaphysique audacieuse : elle affirme un " occasionnalisme " intégral (les actions des créatures ne sont que l'" (...) occasion " de l'agir divin), conçoit " l'étendue intelligible " comme la matrice des idées des corps et fonde les vérités théoriques et pratiques sur une " vision en Dieu " dont la singularité étonne et prête à malentendu. Aussi la pensée de Malebranche occupe-t-elle une place remarquable dans l'histoire des idées. L'antipsychologisme de sa théorie de la signification, sa déconstruction de la notion de cause finie au profit du schème de la loi, sa mise en question de la conscience comme mode de connaissance sont des thèses que la modernité a su s'approprier. Although theoretical underpinnings of stakeholder dialog (SD) have been extensively discussed in the extant literature, there is a lack of empirical studies presenting evidence on the SD initiatives undertaken by firms. In this article, we provide information about 294 SD initiatives collected through a content analysis of the sustainability reports published by large firms in Germany, Italy, and the U. S. In addition to a country-based description of the different forms, stakeholder categories, and topics of the SD initiatives, we explore (...) the relationship between SD and characteristics of national business systems. Overall, we find firms undertake few SD initiatives, using low-involvement forms of dialog, and focusing on one category of stakeholders per initiative. Results suggest that the explicit approach to corporate social responsibility (CSR) favors the quantity of SD initiatives, but neglects the importance of the level of involvement and diversity of stakeholders participating at the dialog. Finally, we find public policies on CSR have a substantial influence on SD in national business systems with an implicit approach to CSR. Public policies based on a shared discussion involving multiple social actors encourage SD initiatives that use different forms of dialog and are characterized by high level of involvement. Our findings offer contributions to the ongoing debate about the effectiveness of SD and its relationship with CSR. (shrink)
