    Knowing truth: Peirce's epistemology in an educational context.Christine L. McCarthy - 2005 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 37 (2):157–176.
In this paper I examine Peirce's epistemological and ontological theories and indicate their relevance to educational practice. I argue that Peirces conception of Firsts, Seconds and Thirds entails a fundamental ontological realism. I further argue that Peirce does have a theory of truth, that it is a particular non‐traditional ‘correspondence’ theory, consistent with, and implicit in, an over‐arching position of pragmatic realism. Peirce's epistemological position is subject to misinterpretation when the ontological realism on which it rests is overlooked. Finally I (...)

Beyond Pittsburgh: Protocols for Controlled Non-Heart-Beating Cadaver Organ Recovery.Bethany Spielman & Cynthia Simmons McCarthy - 1995 - Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal 5 (4):323-333.
Much of the ethical debate about controlled non-heart-beating cadaver (NHBC) organ recovery has focused on the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) protocol. Some commentators have voiced serious reservations about the ethical acceptability of that protocol; others have argued that the protocol contains sufficiently stringent ethical safeguards to warrant a limited and carefully monitored trial at UPMC. UPMC is not the only organization pursuing controlled NHBC organ procurement, however. The study of organ procurement organizations described in this article suggests that (...)

Elite Schools in Globalising Circumstances: New Conceptual Directions and Connections.Jane Kenway & Cameron McCarthy (eds.) - 2015 - Routledge.
_Elite Schools in Globalizing Circumstances_ foregrounds the richly theoretical and empirically-based work of an international cast of scholars seeking to break out of the confines of the methodological nationalism that now governs so much of contemporary scholarship on schooling. Based on a 5-year extended global ethnography of elite schools in nine different countries—countries defined by colonial pasts linked to England—the contributors make a powerful case for the rethinking of elite schools and elite class formation theory in light of contemporary processes (...)

This stunning new edition retains the book's broad aims, intended audience, and multidisciplinary approach. New chapters take into account the more current backdrop of globalization, particularly events such as 9/11, and attendant developments that make a reconsideration of race relations in education quite urgent.

“The Islamic State is not Islamic:” Terrorism, Sovereignty and Declarations of Unbelief.Caleb D. McCarthy - 2016 - Critical Research on Religion 4 (2):156-170.
This article examines the Islamic concept of takfīr as it is used in secular-pluralistic contexts, within a larger delegitimizing discourse against terrorism. I argue that this takfīr as deployed by “liberal” Muslims, functions to legitimate the state’s use of coercive force. Furthermore, the secular state may in turn draw upon these discourses to co-opt the right to determine authentic Muslim identity. However, in doing so the state is forced to enter into a religiously discursive space. Takfīr notably becomes the site (...)

The value placed on care work: wet-nurses at the Hôpital du Saint-Esprit, Marseille 1306-1457. [REVIEW]Caley McCarthy - 2019 - Clio 49:43-68.
