The Matrix Verb as a Source of Comprehension Difficulty in Object Relative Sentences.Adrian Staub, Brian Dillon & Charles Clifton - 2017 - Cognitive Science 41 (S6):1353-1376.
Two experiments used eyetracking during reading to examine the processing of the matrix verb following object and subject relative clauses. The experiments show that the processing of the matrix verb following an object relative is indeed slowed compared to the processing of the same verb following a subject relative. However, this difficulty is entirely eliminated if additional material intervenes between the object gap and the matrix verb. An explanation in terms of spillover processing is ruled out, suggesting that it is (...)

  7. Ellipsis and discourse coherence.Lyn Frazier & Charles Clifton - 2006 - Linguistics and Philosophy 29 (3):315-346.
VP ellipsis generally requires a syntactically matching antecedent. However, many documented examples exist where the antecedent is not appropriate. Kehler, 533–575. 2002, Coherence, Reference and the Theory of Grammer, CSLI Publications. Stanford.) proposed an elegant theory which predicts a syntactic antecedent for an elided VP is required only for a certain discourse coherence relation, not for cause-effect relations. Most of the data Kehler used to motivate his theory come from corpus studies and thus do not consist of true minimal pairs. (...)

Combating discrimination using Bayesian networks.Koray Mancuhan & Chris Clifton - 2014 - Artificial Intelligence and Law 22 (2):211-238.
Discrimination in decision making is prohibited on many attributes, but often present in historical decisions. Use of such discriminatory historical decision making as training data can perpetuate discrimination, even if the protected attributes are not directly present in the data. This work focuses on discovering discrimination in instances and preventing discrimination in classification. First, we propose a discrimination discovery method based on modeling the probability distribution of a class using Bayesian networks. This measures the effect of a protected attribute in (...)

The processing of inflected forms.Charles Clifton, Anne Cutler, James M. McQueen & Brit van Ooijen - 1999 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 22 (6):1018-1019.
Clahsen proposes two distinct processing routes, for regularly and irregularly inflected forms, respectively, and thus is apparently making a psychological claim. We argue that his position, which embodies a strictly linguistic perspective, does not constitute a psychological processing model.
