The aim of this paper is to account for the effect of mother's death on child survival in a historical population. Using comprehensive data on the early French Canadian population of Quebec, evidence is provided for a higher risk of dying for motherless children that remains significant over all childhood and long after the death of the mother. The specific effect of the loss of maternal care was estimated by comparing mortality before and after mother's death, furnishing a means to (...) control for family heterogeneity. No differential in investment between genders was detected before age 3, but older girls suffered a three-fold higher susceptibility to mother's death than their male counterparts. This suggests that grown-up girls assuming the responsibilities of the missing mother had a lower chance of survival. (shrink)

The Problems of Philosophy is a 1912 book by Bertrand Russell, in which Russell attempts to create a brief and accessible guide to the problems of philosophy. Focusing on problems he believes will provoke positive and constructive discussion, Russell concentrates on knowledge rather than metaphysics: If it is uncertain that external objects exist, how can we then have knowledge of them but by probability. Economic development approaches are increasingly entailing local geographic scales and encouraging the mobilization and organization of territorial actors given local conditions and resources. Lebanon is a country facing frequent uncertainty with recent economic and social difficulties. Its popular cuisine may play a key role in its development and that of its rural space. In fact, that cuisine incorporates a traditional cultural practice called “Mouneh” which consists of preserved pantry foods, historically used to ensure household nutrition. Today, rural food cooperatives are (...) engaging in that practice using agricultural produce from local farmers and are employing women. Despite strong internal and external challenges, they remain attractive actors as their principles of collective benefit, participation and democracy form a strong link with sustainable development goals. This study transversally analyzes the status of food cooperatives in a major agricultural region in Lebanon, the Bekaa valley. Findings mainly quantified size and production and provided a mapped representation of the spatial dependencies on local farmers versus urban markets for trade. With 75% women members and firm reputation in authenticity, food cooperatives in the Bekaa specifically and Lebanon generally are also extensively supported by donors but are being labeled as donor-dependent. Yet, cooperatives are localized in a largely agricultural territory with sufficient evidence of differentiation that could potentially be valorized. Hence, with optimal framing, regulation and networking of cooperatives, one can assume a protection of culinary heritage is possible with scalable contribution to food security and needed local development given major recent setbacks. In “Spandrels,” Gould and Lewontin criticized what they took to be an all-too-common conviction, namely, that adaptation to current environments determines organic form. They stressed instead the importance of history. In this paper, we elaborate upon their concerns by appealing to other writings in which those issues are treated in greater detail. Gould and Lewontin’s combined emphasis on history was three-fold. First, evolution by natural selection does not start from scratch, but always refashions preexisting forms. Second, preexisting forms are refashioned (...) by the selection of whatever mutational variations happen to arise: the historical order of mutations needs to be taken into account. Third, the order of environments and selection pressures also needs to be taken into account. (shrink)

Revonsuo proposed an intriguing and detailed evolutionary theory of dreams which stipulates that the biological function of dreaming is to simulate threatening events and to rehearse threat avoidance behaviors. The goal of the present study was to test this theory using a sample of 212 recurrent dreams that was scored using a slightly expanded version of the DreamThreat rating scale. Six of the eight hypotheses tested were supported. Among the positive findings, 66% of the recurrent dream reports contained one or (...) more threats, the threats tended to be dangerous and aimed at the dreamer, and when facing a threat, the dreamer tended to take defensive or evasive actions that were possible and reasonable. However, less than 15% of the recurrent dreams depicted realistic and probable situations critical for one’s physical survival or reproductive success and the dreamer rarely succeeded in fleeing the threat despite important and appropriate efforts. The findings thus provide mixed support for the threat simulation theory. (shrink)

En France, Nietzsche fut un temps l'emblème oraculaire de toutes les subversions et son nom côtoyait couramment ceux d'Artaud et de Bataille. Puis vint l'âge de son académisation qui permit bien des avancées et où on lui attribua l'insigne mérite d'avoir élaboré un système tout à fait cohérent dont la reconstitution méticuleuse pouvait occuper toute une vie. Le présent ouvrage fait le pari que le moment est venu de mettre en avant un autre Nietzsche, celui d'un philosophe dont l'oeuvre obéit (...) à une dynamique originale où s'enchevêtrent des registres dont l'homogénéité ne va pas de soi. C'est le concept d'historicité qui est mobilisé à cette fin. Le passé lointain auquel doit régresser le savoir généalogique ; la réitération indéfinie du même présent que la sagesse de l'éternel retour doit inciter à vouloir ; le futur un peu brumeux de très long terme auquel doit oeuvrer le véritable créateur : trois temps, trois registres et trois problèmes aussi - objectivité, répétition, évolution. On ne doit pas trop vite présumer que ces trois discours n'en font qu'un. Au contraire : toute la difficulté est de savoir comment tirer ensemble ces fils, si seulement il faut les nouer et si oui, selon quelles modalités qui ne sont pas forcément celles du système. On peut encore dire ce qui précède autrement : si Dieu est mort et si Nietzsche s'est efforcé à tout prix de conjurer la posture du prêtre, le lecteur doit en tirer les conséquences. Interpréter, c'est ruminer, pas refermer. (shrink)

Dans un précédent ouvrage, La liberté, la pensée et la mort chez Platon et Montaigne, il a été montré que, chez Platon comme chez Montaigne, la mort, loin d'être le plus terrible des maux, est en fait une libération, car elle rend possible un détachement d'avec la vie qui leur est apparue soit contaminée par des fictions, soit cruellement angoissante. Les mêmes thèmes sont repris dans cet ouvrage avec Spinoza et Freud, mais dans un contexte déterministe qui les empêche de (...) croire encore à la possibilité d'une pensée humaine inconditionnée. La philosophie ne suffit plus à apprendre à mourir. Sans une analyse des causes qui déterminent l'activité mentale, à savoir le désir et les pulsions animiques, la pensée demeure asservie à des finalités imaginaires. Il s'ensuit que, pour philosopher, il faut d'abord renoncer au fantasme du sujet libre ou du moi maître de lui-même. Ce sont ces personnages qui doivent mourir pour penser et exister librement. En ce sens, la mort apparaît, ici aussi, comme une délivrance qui devient, de ce fait, désirable. (shrink)

De cette tendance émerge une nouvelle valeur qui ne prétend plus à la transcendance du Beau ni au choc cathartique du Laid, mais revendique une mocheté assumée et militante. Un moche qui entend déconstruire les anciennes hiérarchies esthétiques et morales au profit d’une vision résolument inclusive. En fait, cette pérégrination tente de raconter comment un philosophe est amené à rencontrer les questions de la mort, de l'euthanasie et du suicide. C'est en quelque sorte le récit d'une rencontre entre la pensée et la mort. Dans ce nouveau livre, Bertrand Vergely a voulu rassembler les expériences auxquelles il a été confronté ces dix dernières années à partir de rencontres, de témoignages et d'expériences. (shrink)
