Claims made in the target article that information-that-specifies is contained in relations among structured energy arrays, considered as wholes, may well be true, but claims that information-that-specifies is only contained in irreducible relations among structured energy arrays, considered as wholes, fail to persuade, at least in the case of the blind.

The model developed in the target article is not as comprehensive as might be desired on two counts: (1) in that how the transition from proximal stimulation at the skin gives rise to the perception of external objects is taken for granted; and (2) in that another population of participants, the blind, constitute an important group from which we can understand somatosensory processing and neural plasticity.

This essay breaks new ground by showing that Blaise Pascal exerted a greater influence upon John Henry Newman than scholars have previously acknowledged. Drawing upon recently discovered unpublished information, this essay traces connections between Pascal’s intuitive mind and Newman’s view of implicit reasoning and suggests overlaps between these two thinkers on such topics as the way implicit reasoning operates, the role of evidences in faith, and the need for ethics to guide good reasoning.
