  1. A parser as an epistemic artifact: A material view on models.Tarja Knuuttila & Atro Voutilainen - 2003 - Philosophy of Science 70 (5):1484-1495.
The purpose of this paper is to suggest that models in scientific practice can be conceived of as epistemic artifacts. Approaching models this way accommodates many such things that working scientists themselves call models but that the semantic conception of models does not duly recognize as such. That models are epistemic artifacts implies, firstly, that they cannot be understood apart from purposeful human activity; secondly, that they are somehow materialized inhabitants of the intersubjective field of that activity; and thirdly, that (...)

Distributing Agency and Experience in Therapeutic Interaction: Person References in Therapists' Responses to Complaints.Marja Etelämäki, Liisa Voutilainen & Elina Weiste - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
The primary means for psychotherapy interaction is language. Since talk-in-interaction is accomplished and rendered interpretable by the systematic use of linguistic resources, this study focuses on one of the central issues in psychotherapy, namely agency, and the ways in which linguistic resources, person references in particular, are used for constructing different types of agency in psychotherapy interaction. The study investigates therapists' responses to turns where the client complains about a third party. It focuses on the way therapists' responses distribute experience (...)

Safeguarding the Therapeutic Alliance: Managing Disaffiliation in the Course of Work With Psychotherapeutic Projects.Aurora Guxholli, Liisa Voutilainen & Anssi Peräkylä - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
Therapeutic alliance is a central concept in psychotherapeutic work. The relationship between the therapist and the patient plays an important role in the therapeutic process and outcome. In this article, we investigate how therapists work with disaffiliation resulting from enduring disagreement while maintaining an orientation to the psychotherapeutic project at hand. Data come from a total of 18 sessions of two dyads undergoing psychoanalytic psychotherapy and is analyzed with conversation analysis. We found that collaborative moves deployed amidst enduring disagreement can (...)

Normalizing in student counseling: Counselors’ responses to students’ problem descriptions.Elina Weiste, Liisa Voutilainen & Kimmo Svinhufvud - 2017 - Discourse Studies 19 (2):196-215.
University students seek counseling to discuss concerns about their academic skills, motivation, time management and well-being. This article examines the conversational activity of normalizing recurrently used by counselors to manage students’ negative emotions and troubles-telling. Normalizing refers to an activity in which something in the interaction is made normal by labeling it ‘normal’ or ‘commonplace’ or by interpreting it in an ordinary way. Three uses for normalizing were identified in a sample of 16 videotaped counseling sessions: supporting the student’s position, (...)

    ‘Delayed response’ in psychodynamic psychotherapy.Aino Koivisto & Liisa Voutilainen - 2022 - Discourse Studies 24 (2):249-265.
A recurrent theme that is addressed in psychotherapies is the client’s conflicting emotions. This article discusses discursive practices of working on conflicting emotions during psychodynamic psychotherapy. We focus on a phenomenon that we refer to as a ‘delayed response’ and analyze the client’s uses of interactional means, such as a display of negative experience, to invite affiliation or empathy from the therapist. The therapist, however, does not take a turn in the first possible place after the client’s turn. Recurrently, the (...)

The power of meta-analysis: a challenge for evidence-based medicine.Paola Berchialla, Daniele Chiffi, Giovanni Valente & Ari Voutilainen - 2020 - European Journal for Philosophy of Science 11 (1):1-18.
This paper discusses the outstanding problem of replicability of empirical data in the context of recent work on meta-analysis, especially within the field of evidence-based medicine. Specifically, it deals with the methodological issue of how to determine the degrees of heterogeneity between different collected studies. After critically reviewing the standard measures used to quantify meta-analytical heterogeneity, we argue that they should be revised in such a way to take into account the statistical power of the individual studies. We thus propose (...)
