Does Use of Solid Fuels for Cooking Contribute to Childhood Stunting? A Longitudinal Data Analysis From Low- and Middle-Income Countries.Ashish Kumar Upadhyay, Swati Srivastava & Vinod Mishra - 2021 - Journal of Biosocial Science 53 (1):121-136.
Using longitudinal data from the first and second waves of the Young Lives Study in Ethiopia, India, Peru and Vietnam, conducted in 2002 and 2006–07, and a repeated measures mixed model, this study examined the effect of the use of solid fuels for cooking on childhood stunting among children aged 5–76 months. The analysis showed that in all four populations, the average height-for-age z-score was much lower among children living in households using solid fuels than among children in households using (...)

New Evidence on the Impact of the Quality of Prenatal Care on Neonatal and Infant Mortality in India.Ashish Kumar Upadhyay, Abhishek Singh & Swati Srivastava - 2020 - Journal of Biosocial Science 52 (3):439-451.
Evidence on the impact of the quality of prenatal care on childhood mortality is limited in developing countries, including India. Therefore, using nationally representative data from the latest round of the National Family Health Survey, this study examined the impact of the quality of prenatal care on neonatal and infant mortality in India using a multivariable binary logistic regression model. The effect of the essential components of prenatal care services on neonatal and infant mortality were also investigated. The results indicate (...)

A Success Story of Reduction in Childhood Stunting and Underweight in India: Analysis of Pooled Data From Three Rounds of Indian Demographic and Health Surveys.Swati Srivastava & Ashish Kumar Upadhyay - 2022 - Journal of Biosocial Science 54 (1):106-123.
This study used a series of individual-level datasets from National Family Health Surveys conducted in 1998–99, 2005–06 and 2015–16 to assess the factors behind the reduction in childhood stunting and underweight in India between the years 1998–99 and 2015–16. A multivariable decomposition regression analysis was performed. Results showed that the prevalence of childhood stunting declined from 49.4% in 1998–99 to 34.9% in 2015–16. Over the same period, the prevalence of childhood underweight declined from 41.9% in 1998–99 to 33.1% in 2015–16. (...)

Contrapositionally Complemented Heyting Algebras and Intuitionistic Logic with Minimal Negation.Anuj Kumar More & Mohua Banerjee - forthcoming - Logic Journal of the IGPL.
Two algebraic structures, the contrapositionally complemented Heyting algebra and the contrapositionally $\vee $ complemented Heyting algebra, are studied. The salient feature of these algebras is that there are two negations, one intuitionistic and another minimal in nature, along with a condition connecting the two operators. Properties of these algebras are discussed, examples are given and comparisons are made with relevant algebras. Intuitionistic Logic with Minimal Negation corresponding to ccHas and its extension ${\textrm {ILM}}$-${\vee }$ for c$\vee $cHas are then investigated. (...)

Kleene Algebras and Logic: Boolean and Rough Set Representations, 3-Valued, Rough Set and Perp Semantics.Arun Kumar & Mohua Banerjee - 2017 - Studia Logica 105 (3):439-469.
A structural theorem for Kleene algebras is proved, showing that an element of a Kleene algebra can be looked upon as an ordered pair of sets, and that negation with the Kleene property is describable by the set-theoretic complement. The propositional logic \ of Kleene algebras is shown to be sound and complete with respect to a 3-valued and a rough set semantics. It is also established that Kleene negation can be considered as a modal operator, due to a perp (...)

Origin and Distribution of Abnormally High Pressure in the Mahanadi Basin, East Coast of India.Ashutosh Kumar, Karthikeyan Gunasekaran, Nitin Bhardwaj, Jayanta Dutta & Smita Banerjee - 2016 - Interpretation: SEG 4 (3):T303-T311.
Drilling deep wells in the Mahanadi Basin of the east coast of India is highly challenging because of the variations in pore pressure in the Miocene formations. We have observed that the wells drilled in the northern part of the study area have more drilling hazards due to the presence of high pore pressure when compared with wells drilled in the southern part of the basin. In the northern part, pore pressure prediction assuming disequilibrium compaction underpredicts by approximately 2–3.5 ppg (...)

    Governing the Global Corporation: A Critical Perspective.Subhabrata Bobby Banerjee - 2010 - Business Ethics Quarterly 20 (2):265-274.
In this article I provide a critical perspective on governing the global corporation. While the papers in the 2009 special issue of Business Ethics Quarterly explore the political role of corporations I argue that they lack a sophisticated analysis of power acrossinstitutional and actor networks. The argument that corporate engagement with deliberative democracy can enhance the legitimacy of corporations does not take into account the effects of institutional, material and discursive forms of power that determine legitimacycriteria. As a result corporate (...)

But how did human morality evolve? And can humans become morally evolved? -/- In A Better Ape, Victor Kumar and Richmond Campbell draw on the latest research in the biological and social sciences to explain the key role that morality has played in human evolution. How Can Mindfulness Enhance Moral Reasoning? An Examination Using Business School Students.Ashish Pandey, Rajesh Chandwani & Ajinkya Navare - 2018 - Business Ethics: A European Review 27 (1):56-71.
Given the comprehensive influence of mindfulness on human thought and behavior, and the importance of moral reasoning in business decisions, we examine the role of mindfulness as an antecedent to moral reasoning through two studies. In Study 1, we propose and test a theoretically derived model that links mindfulness and moral reasoning, mediated by compassion and egocentric bias using a survey design. In Study 2, we examine whether mindfulness training enhances moral reasoning using an experimental design with graduate students of (...)

Pharmaceutical advertising is one of the most important kinds of advertising that can have a direct impact on the health of a consumer. Hence, this necessitates the fact that it is essential for advertisers of such products to take special care and additional responsibility when devising the promotional strategies of these products. In reality, it has been observed that pharmaceutical product advertisers often promoted their products to achieve their own goals at the potential risk of having an adverse effect on (...)

For a Dalit, especially from a rural background, it is not easy to survive in the higher education system in India because it is overwhelmingly dominated by the upper caste, class, and English-speaking people. It is not uncommon for Dalit learners like us to face multiple discrimination, and even exclusion in higher educational institutions. Intersectionality between these three factors abounds in institutions of higher learning. The transition from native language to English has not been an easy task for me, for in (...)

Higher Education has been considered as a site of knowledge, and it is a place, where one can pursue it. But, the distribution of knowledge and acquiring knowledge is controlled by various factors. For example, caste, class, language, region, religion, gender, race, etc. The two principal factors, i.e. language and caste, determine one's access and then survival in higher educational institutions. The Hegemony of English language becomes a very problematic for non-English background students in the higher educational classroom in India. (...)

Patristic scholars have commented on the early church’s common practice of drawing catechetical instructions from the creation account in Genesis. One of the recurring motifs in such discussions is the fathers’ use of the Adam-Christ typology with its soteriological and sacramental implications. The present study briefly explores this theme in John Chrysostom and Cyril of Alexandria with particular reference to the baptism of Jesus and the theological challenge it posed to the early church: Did Jesus the Lord receive the Spirit (...)

One hundred and fifty years ago, a hopeful young researcher reported a recent discovery he had made. Working in the bowels of a medieval castle in the German city of Tübingen, he had isolated a then entirely new type of molecule. This was the birth of a field that would fundamentally change the course of biology, medicine, and beyond. His discovery: DNA. His name: Friedrich Miescher. This chapter discusses contemporary scientific research on the role of reason and emotion in moral judgment. The literature suggests that moral judgment is influenced by both reasoning and emotion separately, but there is also emerging evidence of the interaction between the two. While there are clear implications for the rationalism-sentimentalism debate, we conclude that important questions remain open about how central emotion is to moral judgment. We also suggest ways in which moral philosophy is not only guided by empirical research (...)
