In this study, we examined the role of social learning theory in explaining academic dishonesty among 673 college students in the United States, France, and Greece. We found support for social learning theory such that perceived peer dishonesty was incrementally valid as a predictor of self-reported academic dishonesty across three countries beyond personal factor of conscientiousness and demographic factor of age. Contrary to expectation, perceived penalty for academic cheating received support in the U.S. sample only. Justification for academic dishonesty contributed (...) incremental variance after controlling for other factors including age, conscientiousness, perceived penalty for cheating and peer dishonesty across three countries. In addition, cultural differences accounted for almost 50% of the explained variance in academic dishonesty with French students reportedly engaged in significantly more academic cheating behavior than Greek and U.S. students. Discussion and implications for business ethics teaching and research were discussed. (shrink)

Τσάκο περί τά 400 λυχνάρια πού χρονολογούνται ἀπό τόν 4° μέχρι καί τόν 7° αιώνα μ.Χ. Τά περισσότερα λυχνάρια ἀνήκουν στόν τύπο τῶν λεγομένων Μικρασιατικῶν Λυχναριῶν. Εἶναι πολύ πιθανό νά υπήρχε καί στή Σάμο κάποιο ἐργαστήριο λυχναριών αὐτοῦ τοῦ τύπου. Μιά ὁμάδα ἀπό 23 Λύχνους ἔχει ἐισαχθεί ἀπό τήν 'Αθήνα. Χρονολογούνται ἀπό τόν 3° μέχρι καί τόν 6° ἀιώνα μ.Χ. Τρία ἀπ' αὐτά (...) προέρχονται ἀπό την Κύπρο. Τά δύο ἀνήκουν στό ἐργαστήριο τοῦ ΕΤΤΥΧΗΤΟΥ πού ἤκμασε τόν 4° ἀιώνα μ.Χ. This article takes as its starting point an exhibition of photographs of May '68 by photojournalist Bruno Barbey at the Hayward Gallery in London in 2008, in order to consider the role that photography has played in shaping the memory and the forgetting of May '68, 40 years on. The article examines the problematic of the documentation and display of protest photographs, focusing on how compositional decisions by the photographer have come to facilitate his photographs' subsequent institutional framing. On this (...) basis I argue that the predominant representational modes support hegemonic narratives of the events of May '68 and highlight questions regarding the current difficulty of attending to the representation of collective political action. Through a wide-ranging international collection of papers, this volume provides theoretical and historical insights into the development and application of phenomenological sociology and ethnomethodology and offers detailed examples of research into social phenomena from these standpoints. All the articles in this volume join together to testify to the enormous efficacy and potential of both phenomenological sociology and ethnomethodology.

Differences in perception and potential disagreements between parents and professionals regarding the attitude for resuscitation at the limit of viability are common. This study evaluated in healthcare professionals whether the decision to resuscitate at the limit of viability are influenced by the way information on incurred risks is given or received. This is a prospective randomized controlled study. This study evaluated the attitude of healthcare professionals by testing the effect of information given through graphic fact sheets formulated either optimistically or (...) pessimistically. The written educational fact sheet included three graphical presentations of survival and complication/morbidity by gestational age. The questionnaire was submitted over a period of 4 months to 5 and 6-year medical students from the Geneva University as well as physicians and nurses of the neonatal unit at the University Hospitals of Geneva. Our sample included 102 healthcare professionals. Forty-nine responders were students, 32 paediatricians and 21 nurses in NICU. The received risk tended to be more severe in both groups compared to the graphically presented facts and current guidelines, although optimistic representation favoured the perception of “survival without disability” at 23 to 25 weeks. Therapeutic attitudes did not differ between groups, but healthcare professionals with children were more restrained and students more aggressive at very low gestational ages. Written information on mortality and morbidity given to healthcare professionals in graphic form encourages them to overestimate the risk. However, perception in healthcare staff may not be directly transferable to parental perception during counselling as the later are usually naïve to the data received. This parental information are always communicated in ways that subtly shape the decisions that follow. (shrink)

In this paper I explicate what it means to see phenomenologically for an able-bodied researcher in the field of disability, and how this seeing yields a non-reductionistic understanding of the phenomenon of disability. My aim is to show how in this context, I, as a human and social scientist can use phenomenological methodology for both collecting and interpreting data. Though phenomenological philosophy can provide the basis of social scientific epistemology, it does not lend itself easily to a single specific or (...) programmatic social scientific methodology. I offer possible ways of using phenomenological theory, methodology and techniques in order to understand the experience of a person with physical disability learning to use a wheelchair. I use data from a clinical encounter between a physical therapist (PT) and an adult with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) in an inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Midwestern United States in order to flesh out phenomenological seeing. I conclude with implications for qualitative researchers who use phenomenological methods to inform their work. (shrink)

This commentary compares the P-FIT model with psychometric and developmental models of intelligence and shows that there are isomorphisms and divergences between them. All three models involve some common dimensions, but the P-FIT model lacks many of the dimensions of the other models. Then we point to research that can lead to the integration of brain models with cognitive-developmental models.

A well-worn trope used by phenomenologists is that things that remain invisible or unnoticed in the course of our everyday being in the world reveal themselves in instances of breakdown. This paper borrows this trope to explicate one instance of breakdown, that of traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI). We use the phenomenology of Heidegger, especially his formulation of ecstatic temporality presented in Being and Time, to illuminate the temporal issues surrounding this radical rupture in Dasein’s being in the world through (...) data collected from field observations of inpatient rehabilitation, interviews with persons with TSCI, and with their rehabilitation providers. Specifically, we explore the breakdown in temporality (the rupture on thrown projection) that occurs in persons who experience TSCI across three interconnected existential dimensions – understanding, attunement (mood), and falling. We conclude by discussing the value this approach to human temporality might have for both social scientists interested in human temporality and to practitioners interested in research related to the rehabilitation process. Offering an introduction to algorithms, this work considers automata in the context of their applications, NP-completeness, Turing machine notation and Chomsky normal form.

The question of what role sex plays in evolution is still open despite decades of research. It has often been assumed that sex should facilitate the increase in fitness. Hence, the fact that it may break down highly favorable genetic combinations has been seen as a problem. Here, we consider an alternative approach. We define a measure that represents the ability of alleles to perform well across different combinations and, using numerical iterations within a classical population-genetic framework, show that selection (...) in the presence of sex favors this ability in a highly robust manner. We also show that the mechanism responsible for this effect has been out of the purview of previous theory, because it operates during the evolutionary transient, and that the breaking down of favorable genetic combinations is an integral part of it. Implications of these results and more to evolutionary theory are discussed. (shrink)

Pričujoči članek obravnava vpliv dramske klime, v kateri se prepletajo zunanje in notranje okoliščine dramskega dogajanja, na odločitve, sodbe in ravnanja dramskih likov. To ponazarjava s primeroma iz Antigone in Trahink. V vzdušju povojnih Teb Ismena omahuje med strahom pred kaznijo in strahom pred božanskim srdom zaradi nepokopa Polinejka. Prav tako lahko vpliv dramske klime opazimo v Kreontovi spremembi odločitve glede Ismenine obsodbe na smrt. Posebno pozornost v članku dobi tudi zahtevno vprašanje atribucije verzov v Antigoni 572, 574 in (...) 576, ki pomembno vpliva na razume­vanje psihologije junakov. Druga obravnavana junakinja, Dejanejra, strahoma pričakuje prerokovano odločitev Heraklove usode v Tra­hini, na robu civilizacije. S spoznanjem resnice o Ioli se Dejanejrina psihološka napetost zaostri do skrajnosti in po premisleku, ki zori v njej v zaodrski tišini med prvim in drugim dejanjem, se odloči za usodno dejanje. Zusammenfassung Der Beitrag behandelt die Phylenreform von 307/06 v. Chr. in Athen und Attika, die durch die Einführung von zwei neuen Phylen, Antigonis und Demetrias, veranlasst wurde, so dass es fortan zwölf Phylen gab. Dies zog die Neuverteilung etlicher Demen nach sich. Gefragt wird zum einen nach dem konkreten administrativen Ablauf dieser Umstellung, zum anderen nach einem möglichen Muster hinter der Zuweisung der Demen an die neuen Phylen bzw. der damit verbundenen Rolle topographischer und prosopographischer Faktoren. Zudem ist von Interesse, (...) worin die Folgen aus der Umstrukturierung, etwa für das Monument der Phylenheroen oder für die Verwaltungspraxis, bestanden und warum das neue System so lang Bestand hatte. Von der Umstellung vom Dezimal- auf das Duodezimalsystem waren in jedem Fall alle Bürger betroffen; ein Vorteil der Reform dürfte auch darin bestanden haben, Korrekturen innerhalb der Demenverteilung mit Blick auf die Bouleutenzahl anbringen zu können. Die neue Untergliederung spricht dafür, dass trotz einer nachlassenden inschriftlichen Praxis von einem Niedergang der Demen und Phylen seit dem ausgehenden 4. Jh. keine Rede sein kann. (shrink)
