This article examines the nature of interpretation in regulation. Drawing on the work of Ronald Dworkin it considers two alternative theses of regulatory interpretation; the conversational thesis and the constructive thesis. The conversational thesis, which seems to find support in several contemporary writings on the use of rules in public administration, perceives regulatory interpretation as a method of interpretation that resembles the interpretation that people deploy in the course of a conversation in their attempt to understand and communicate with their (...) co-discussants. The constructive thesis describes regulatory interpretation as a dialectical practice whose ultimate objective is to meet the demand for new and better interpretations in accordance with the public standards that best justify regulatory practice. It will be argued that the constructive thesis offers a more appealing account of regulatory interpretation because it is better placed to accommodate two apparently conflicting intuitions with respect to interpretation in the regulatory domain. The first one is the idea that the meaning of regulatory provisions must not be entirely contingent on the beliefs and/or preferences of those conducting the interpretation, for otherwise interpretation collapses into a cynical game of rent-seeking and regulatory capture. Bone‐marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BM‐MSC) proliferation and lineage commitment are under the coordinated control of metabolism and epigenetics; the MSC niche contains low oxygen, which is an important determinant of the cellular metabolic state. In turn, metabolism drives stem cell fate decisions via alterations of the chromatin landscape. Due to the fundamental role of BM‐MSCs in the development of adipose tissue, bones and cartilage, age‐associated changes in metabolism and the epigenome perturb the balance between stem cell proliferation and differentiation leading (...) to stem cell depletion, fat accumulation and bone‐quality related diseases. Therefore, understanding the dynamics of the metabolism‐chromatin interplay is crucial for maintaining the stem cell pool and delaying the development and progression of ageing. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the role of metabolism in stem cell identity and highlights the impact of the metabolic inputs on the epigenome, with regards to stemness and pluripotency. This article examines the role of social context in corporate social responsibility research. The authors direct attention to three major perspectives in organization studies—institutional, cultural, and cognitive—that bear on the social context and explore how these perspectives are used in CSR research. These perspectives are framed as representative of the levels at which CSR may be analyzed, and each perspective is associated with a certain level of social context: the institutional perspective relates to the external social context, the cultural perspective (...) relates to the organizational level, and the cognitive perspective relates to the individual level. The authors demonstrate how the CSR field can benefit by combining or integrating multiple perspectives that bear on the social context, and by engaging in more explicit multilevel analysis of the social context within which CSR practicesunfold. Three promising avenues for future CSR research are outlined: social ecology, cross-sector social partnerships, and strategy-as-practice. The authors argue that these avenues transcend levels and perspectives and offer the prospect of more context-sensitive CSR research. (shrink)
