The following pages deal with the anthropological turn produced in the work of José Ortega y Gasset in relation to the transit between the modern reason, to which the Spanish philosopher is joined in his youth—a period in which Ortega opts for the western culture as an essential one, due to the Greek roots of Europe—, and the historical and vital reason, which is open to the cultural plurality and dominates his thought from the beginning of the twenties on. Against (...) the modern and pro-European reason of his initial thought, Ortega proposes in the 1920s, a type of vital reason that incorporates the idea of historical sense that is the element that will define his anthropological thought from now on. The cultural monism praised by the Spanish philosopher in his first years as highbrow, is replaced by a pluralism of cultures which is characteristic of the contemporaneity. (shrink)

En la obra de Ortega, inmersa en la tradición del pensamiento político contemporáneo, podemos encontrar esta concepción del poder, pero también –y aquí radica la justificación de la elección del tema– con un significado mucho más amplio, al remitir aquél el poder principalmente al ámbito de (...) lo social o de la propia colectividad, que aparece como la raíz a partir de la cual surge y a que se reduce cualquier otra forma de poder que podemos encontrar en sociedad. The following pages deal with the Ortega’s anthropology. I’m going to offer the Ortega’s contribution to modern’s ethnography. Ortega knew and debated the anthropological ideas of his time: evolutionist, particularist, difusionist, functionalist. Adopting a historical point of view, Ortega set out the reasons for his disagreement about the dogmatic, ethnocentric, evolutionist and progressive vision of the Western Europe in connection with of the universal history. He awards enormous importance in his writings to the recognition of ethnic and cultural horizons, which (...) have been historically and traditionally forgotten, which turns him into the rigorous anthropologic theoretical one. These contributions that Ortega y Gasset realizes to the field of the anthropology in his social and cultural domain complete his reflections on the historical sense of the life and the purely vital perspective of every man and cultural society with which there deals specifically his historical and rational vital anthropology. In the following pages, I am going to put forward the ethical-philosophical and anthropological keys of Meditations on Quixote. In order to do that, we pay attention to the theory of love in Ortega´s thought in the context of his first and quoted work. Ortega thought carefully about the love following an important philosophical tradition which dates back to classical times in Greece. Ortega was a philosopher and for this particular reason he considered that philosophy is the general science of (...) love; inside the intelectual globe, that represents the great impetus towards an absolute connexion. We try to justify this work in the fact that Ortega´s thought about love and hatred hasn´t been studied taking into account the ethical-philosophical and anthropological theory that appers in Meditation on Quixote. Likewise, it is true that Ortega dialogues, in the contexto of that work, with other authors, such as Sócrates, Plato, Spinoza, Nietzsche or Scheler. We will also study the social and political interferences of his reflection on love in the restoration of the Spanish monarchy. (shrink)

Las siguientes páginas versan sobre el valor que el filósofo español José Ortega y Gasset (1883-1955) concedió en su obra de madurez intelectual a la fantasía o la imaginación como dimensión fundamental de la vida humana como realidad radical que nos permite trascender, aunque sea a costa de convertirnos en tránsfugas o desertores de nuestra propia animalidad, nuestra propia naturaleza instintiva e irracional. Nuestra argumentación pivotará en torno a la conocida tesis del filósofo español que dice que «el hombre no (...) tiene naturaleza, sino que tiene... historia», que es, según Ortega, esforzarse en realizar lo imaginario, lo que nos permite hablar del ser humano como animal fantástico, estando aquí la clave de este trabajo. Las siguientes páginas versan sobre la idea de democracia en la obra de José Ortega y Gasset (1883-1955), mostrando el _giro_ que se produce en su pensamiento. De ideal ético o imperativo moral, la democracia pasa a ser considerada por el filósofo español un “ideal” político en su obra de madurez intelectual. En su mocedad, un Ortega _Moderno _concibe la democracia en un sentido ilustrado, es decir, como ideal, como labor de cultura y como imperativo moral, mostrando su deuda con (...) la filosofía práctica de Kant, y vinculando aquella a la idea de comunidad (_gemeinschaft_), afirmando en 1909 lo siguiente: _socialización de la cultura, comunidad del trabajo, resurrección de la moral: esto significa para mí democracia._ En un segundo momento, y toda vez que Ortega ha perdido su _fe viva _en la _Modernidad_ y en el ideal ético de mocedad, comenzará a dialogar con la tradición del pensamiento político liberal occidental, concibiendo la democracia principalmente como una norma de derecho político, así como alertando de sus posibles excesos o desvaríos. This paper deals with the dialectic “nature/culture” in the thought of José Ortega y Gasset and related to the ideas of salvation and tragedy. Justify the elaboration of his article in the fact that this topic has not been studied in-depth through the complete works of the philosopher of the vital reason. The results/conclusions are the following ones: In a first period, it stands out the primate of culture in Ortega´s thought, who considers the last one as saviour and also (...) as something antagonistic in relation to the more instinctive and irrational nature of the individual human being as a member of humanity. We can say that submission to natural inclinations, that symbolize our barbarous, irrational and savage side, appears in Ortega’s early writings as a form of tragedy or “radical evil” ; on the other hand, in his latter thought those ones will be interpreted by Ortega not in negative terms, but as something in continuity with culture, which can became a form of tragedy.
