El autor pasa revista a la concepción de la historia como disciplina que exhibe el filósofo Fernando Miguel Pérez Herranz. El motivo de este concienzudo análisis es la publicación en marcha del magno proyecto Más allá de imperios y naciones (4 vols.) iniciado en 2023 y que ya cuenta con dos tomos en el mercado: Rutas, fronteras y complejidad y Singularidad imperial: del Mediterráneo al Atlántico. Esta concepción del estatuto gnoseológico de la historia tiene en Lindos y tornadizos (2016) (...) y en Ambiguus proetus (2019) dos momentos esenciales que dibujan el paso Herranz a su perspectiva (la morfología filosófica) en el debate entre Gustavo Bueno y Ricardo Sánchez Ortiz de Urbina a cuenta del sujeto trascendental. En tal contexto cobran relevancia las hipercategorías formuladas por Pérez Herranz y cuyo estatuto resulta problemático. (shrink)

O século XIII de Alberto Magno é um período no qual começa a circular mais intensamente a recepção das traduções completas dos Elementos de Euclides, que foram feitas por Adelardo de Bath, Roberto de Chester e João de Tinemue, além da tradução de Gerard de Cremona ao comentário feito pelo matemático árabe Al-Nayrizi ao geômetra alexandrino. O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar como Alberto incorpora as traduções arabo-latinas de Euclides com a visão latina da prática geométrica.

This article aims to address the widespread thesis according to which medieval scholastics would not handle the idea of fine art. Based on a suggestion by Anzulewicz, the author shows how Albert the Great did understand the peculiarity of fine arts and put them in close relationship with liberal arts. There are fine arts, such as music, which are sought after for their own sake and can, therefore, be considered as fully liberal. In contrast to them, there are other arts (...) called mechanical, whose purpose is utilitarian. In the third place, there are other arts which, although also possessing some utility, are chosen for their own sake and are therefore partly liberal; we should place fine arts such as architecture in that group. The more art participates in reason and the beauty of the soul, the more it will be fine and liberal. The product is called to be a metaphor for the honest good of virtue. The very contemplation of this beauty embodied by art evokes an aesthetic enjoyment. In this way, we can see that Albert, no less than Aquinas, speaks of the pleasure linked to the contemplation of beauty. (shrink)

In this paper we intend to fill a gap in the study of medieval philosophy by providing a complete and stable text of the Preface to Aristotle’s De Praedicamentis by Albert the Great. Our intention is that this translation could be useful for scholars of Aristotle and its reception in the 13th century, and of the Colonian author himself. We also provide an initial discussion about the historical and philosophical contextualization as well as a philological discussion about the fundamental terms (...) of the fragment. We provide also a glossary that includes the fundamental concepts as well as their use in the text. En este artículo pretendemos llenar un vacío en el estudio dde la filosofía medieval aportando un texto completo y estable del Proemio al De Praedicamentis de Alberto Magno. Nuestra intención es que pueda servir como herramienta para estudiosos tanto de Aristóteles y su recepción en el Siglo XIII, como del propio autor Coloniense. Aportamos además una discusión inicial acerca de la contextualización histórica y filosófica así como una discusión filológica acerca de los términos fundamentales del fragmento. Ponemos también a disposición del lector un glosario que recoge los conceptos fundamentales así como su uso en el texto. (shrink)

This paper shows that the interpretation of the ‘Bochumer Schule’, which sees a fundamental continuity from the philosophy of Averroes and Albert the Great to that of Theodoric of Freiberg and Master Eckhart, is not right, both from a merely historical and a strictly philosophical point of view.

El presente estudio aclara la paradoja del espíritu humano tendido entre la finitud y la infinitud, como lo entiende Edith Stein, iluminado por Alberto el Grande. Esta paradoja constituye la dimensión originaria del espíritu humano, que es un espíritu finito más real y auténtico cuando se comprende a sí mismo como proveniente de Dios, revelando la simultaneidad dinámica del tiempo y la eternidad, capaz de colaborar con el Espíritu infinito en la medida en que es anticipado por este.

Albert the Great understands wisdom principally as a characteristic of human science, not principally as a feature of revealed theology. The article deals with the texts of his comments on Nicomachean Ethics and Metaphysics in order to know how he understands this knowledge.

In the Commentary on the Metaphysics, Albert the Great (d. 1280) envisages the possibility that the human intellect relates to the highest realities not only as the eyes of the bat see the light of day (analogy used by Aristotle at the beginning of the second book of the Metaphysics) but also – thanks to study and gradually, already in this life – as the eyes of the eagle see the circle of the Sun. In the Summa theologiae, discussing the (...) same Aristotelian passage, Albert the Great replaces the eagle with the herodius (“golden eagle”, i.e. the eagle having supreme vision for Albert). The paper analyzes the meaning of this variation in Albertine ornithology, examining other passages of his works in which the herodius is mentioned and evaluating whether this is a sheer case of substitution of a species (the eagle) with one of its subspecies (the herodius) with the same meaning and function, or a subtle distinction between two different cognitive abilities required respectively by metaphysics and theology to know their objects of investigation. O presente estudo investiga a seguinte questão: a natureza definida por Aristóteles na _Física _e no _De caelo_ como princípio intrínseco e causa de movimento, especialmente da locomoção, de fato, é o princípio e a causa da locomoção cósmica, para Alberto Magno, Boaventura de Bagnoregio e Christine de Pizan? A hipótese estabelecida aqui sustenta uma resposta negativa. Para tanto, primeiro contextualizarei brevemente o surgimento da cosmologia universitária parisiense, o que é feito mediante a articulação entre as noções de (...) _machina mundi_ e _impetus_ realizada por João de Sacrobosco. Com efeito, ao explicar a perene locomoção da máquina cósmica, Sacrobosco silencia no que toca à natureza do _impetus_. Alberto, Boaventura e Christine, por sua vez, entendem que a causalidade da natureza está limitada às esferas e às classes naturais determinadas, ou seja, no domínio do todo, do cosmo, a _causa motus_ se reduz à _causa essendi_, o _creator_, que é a divindade, razão pela qual o _impetus_ que locomove a máquina cósmica não parece ser natural. Assim sendo, a questão que surge na cosmologia ou física se estende para a metafísica e para a teologia natural, tonando a discussão complexa o suficiente para despertar interesse filosófico. El presente artículo investiga el misterio del «ser» en el Comentario de Alberto Magno a la Teología Mística y las Epistulas de Dionisio Areopagita, a través de una lectura circular del Corpus Dionysianum, comentado en torno a 1250 por Alberto en su totalidad a diferencia de Tomás de Aquino. Dicho comentario pone de manifiesto la estructura propia de toda la obra albertina, su forma mentis y su método. Como tal, este estudio se suma al interés renovado por (...) la obra albertina en la línea de la «ciencia mística». This article investigates the mystery of «being» in the Comment Albertus Magnus the Mystical Theology and Epistulas of Dionysius, through a circular Dionysianum Corpus reading, said around 1250 by Alberto in its entirety a difference Aquinas. This comment reveals the structure of the entire albertina work, its forma mentis and method. As such, this study adds to renewed work in the Albertine line of the «mystical science» interest. Se examina cómo, para Alberto Magno, la materia del hilemorfismo como pura potencia no permite explicar el cambio sustancial, por lo cual redefine los principios metafísicos del aristotelismo. Considera necesario que la forma sustancial pre-exista como forma incoada en la materia prima, para que el cambio sea continuo y teleológico. Estas formas incoadas, llamadas formae materiae o formae partis se comportan como habitudo y virtus formativa, y actualizan únicamente la materia, no la totalidad del compuesto.

En este trabajo se estudia la versión del intelecto agente según San Alberto Magno, el cual, junto con tesis tradicionales, sostiene otras tan novedosas como agudas: nace del orden del esse hominis; es principio de individuación en el hombre; es propio suyo el deseo de saber, la libertad, la sutileza, la santidad y la profecía; su conocer es un estar–en–sí– mismo; se sirve del hábito de los primeros principios; procede de Dios y a él tiene como fin; nos (...) asemeja al ser divino; tendrá un conocimiento distinto tras esta vida. Alberto Magno designa una división tripartita para la filosofía, en la cual la “filosofía real” se encuentra compuesta por la física, la matemática y la metafísica, dispuestas de este modo secundum ordinem doctrinae. El saber metafísico constituye el saber más excelso y es denominado scientia divina, que se articula con la teología a modo de una gradación de distintos estadios de inteligibilidad, y pone de manifiesto el problema dialéctico fe-razón.

Alberto Magno foi o primeiro grande comentador de Aristóteles entre os cristãos. Em seu Prólogo à Ética a Nicômaco, defronta-se ele com a divisão da philosophia moralis em individual, econômica e política. Seus antecessores, porém, não faziam união entre os três ramos, enquanto Alberto, usando praticamente os mesmos argumentos e reinterpretando-os a seu modo, consegue recuperar a unidade da ética.

O dominicano Alberto Magno é o responsável pela fundação do neoplatonismo na Escolástica Dominicana alemã e pelo nascimento da mística da mesma linhagem, graças também às obras pseudodionisianas por ele comentadas. Dentre estas, a Teologia Mística é certamente uma das mais influentes: a finalidade deste artigo, em primeiro lugar, é mostrar a recepção do Pseudo-Dionísio Areopagita na Idade Média, focando a atenção na obra De Mystica theologia e nos seus comentários latinos; em segundo lugar, apresentar sua estrutura e (...) a subdivisão em linhas gerais; em terceiro lugar, examinar o conceito albertiano de mística e, finalmente, aprofundar as questões da relação entre affectus e intellectus e do modo próprio de conhecer a Deus na concepção do Doctor universalis. Resumo: A finalidade deste trabalho é destacar importância e o legado do dominicano Alberto Magno na controvérsia com os defensores da unicidade do intelecto possível para todo o gênero humano. Para tanto, será feita uma apresentação sumária do seu tratado De unitate intellectus, redigido em 1263. Após uma contextualização histórica que apresenta a posição do bispo de Regensburg diante das teses averroístas, procurar-se-á mostrar como ele foi o inspirador, quanto a essa questão, de um dos seus alunos mais (...) brilhantes: Tomás de Aquino. Além disso, deseja-se frisar como, para o Doctor Universalis, a contribuição de Averróis se revelasse indispensável: este soube indicar, com efeito, a maneira correta segundo a qual o intelecto devia ser considerado “imaterial”, embora sua conclusão da existência de um único intelecto possível para todo gênero humano fosse inaceitável.: The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance and the legacy of the Dominican Albertus Magnus in the controversy with the defenders of the possible unity of the intellect of all mankind. To this end, a brief presentation of his treatise De unitate intellectus, written in 1263, will be given. After a historical contextualization that presents the Bishop of Regensburg’s position in relation to Averroism, it will be shown how he inspired one of his most brilliant students, Thomas Aquinas, with regard to this topic. Moreover, it is pointed out that, for the Doctor Universalis, Averroes’ contribution proved indispensable: the latter was able to indicate the correct way in which the intellect should be considered “immaterial”, although his conclusion that there was a possible single intellect for all mankind was unacceptable. This contribution explores in detail the presence and the context of two quotations of the philosopher and theologian Abū Ḥāmid al-Ġazālī (Algazel for the Latin world) in Albert the Great’s late Summa theologiae sive de mirabili scientia Dei. The two quotations, which concern the notion of the soul as “abridged letter” or “copy” [nusḫa muḫtaṣara, chartula brevis] on which all pieces of knowledge are potentially transcribed, occur in two significant textual points of Albert’s Summa. Two different aspects of al-Ġazālī’s simile (...) are addressed in the article: the consideration of the soul as a book, which has extremely wide biblical and literary echoes, and the consideration of the soul as a place, also with regard to the already Aristotelian, and then Albertinian notion of locus intelligibilium. The feature the two passages by Albert share is the acknowledgment of Algazel as a source of primary importance, capable of corroborating with his authority both a Christian theological doctrine and the littera itself of Aristotle’s De anima, in a culturally momentous philosophical-theological, and Islamic-Christian, cooperation. Thanks to a focused analysis on further contexts of reception of the same Ġazālīan image, which bear witness to its peculiar memorability and its differentiated usages, the article argues in conclusion in favour of a more attentive and in-depth study of philosophical similes such as the one here discussed. Alberto Magno aprovecha lo mejor del neoplatonismo y del aristotelismo. Examina la doctrina aristotélica sobre el deseo de la verdad presente en la naturaleza humana y la ciencia metafísica que permite intuir la fuente de ese deseo, pero éste es analizado con más profundidad por el Pseudo Dionisio, siendo la ciencia teológica la que da más respuestas y la ciencia más universal, porque logra una mayor perfección no sólo intelectual sino de toda la persona.

La física de Alberto Magno se centra sobre la base de una materialidad que no puede ser definida como pura potencialidad pues no podría explicarse la continuidad y teleología propias de todo cambio sustancial. Por esto, en la materia primera existen ciertas dimensiones cuantitativas indeterminadas que la hacen divisible y le permiten sustentar a la forma sustancial en el cambio. Estas dimensiones suponen la presencia de una primera formalidad en la materia, llamada forma corporeitatis, que hacen de la (...) materia primera una realidad actualizada e independiente de la forma sustancial. Starting from the 13th century, the question of defining theology as a science gained prominence within a new epistemological reflection on the discipline. It has been hypothesized that the availability of new translations of Aristotelian works significantly contributed to the growing interest among theologians in the theory of science. One of the most prominent intellectuals who recognized the necessity of defining theology as a science and outlining its boundaries and investigative methods in relation to other disciplines, was Albert the Great (...) (d. 1280). Numerous studies have been dedicated to exploring Albert’s treatment of this subject since the 1930s. However, little to no attention has been given to the role played by Arabic sources, particularly the works of Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā, d. 1037), the philosopher and polymath of Persian origin, in shaping Albert’s own definition of theology as a science. This contribution concentrates on the analysis of a section of the Summa Theologiae (Treatise I, quaestio V, chapter 3), with particular emphasis on the ‘translation’ of the logical-argumentative method from its domain of application in scientific and philosophical research to the branch of theology dedicated to safeguarding Christian doctrine against the criticisms and the attacks of heretics. The aim is to analyze how Albert accomplished this translation of the method of inquiry by drawing parallels between the defence of the principles of philosophical inquiry, which is a primary concern of metaphysics, and the defence of the articles of faith in theology. It is by reconciling sources from both the Christian and the Arabo-Islamic traditions that Albert claims the use of a form of dialectic argumentation within theology. (shrink)

El ideal propuesto por Santo Domingo de Guzmán a la Orden de Predicadores alcanzó, en la obra de Alberto Magno, su primera expresión académica y sistemática. La vita activa constituye una efusión de la vita contemplativa en la temporalidad. Ambas conforman lo que en la tradición dominicana recibe el nombre de vita apostolica. Objeto del presente estudio es mostrar que la contemplación no solo orienta el obrar moral y político, sino que fundamentalmente lo transforma. Los hombres no son (...) buenos solo porque pueden ofrecer una explicación racional acerca de Dios como causa primera, sino porque, contemplando al Dios Revelado y Sus obras, se deciden resueltamente a traducir Su modelo en la vida política, mediante la virtus politica. Among the various questions on different subjects attributed to Albert the Great, and presumably disputed in Paris around the middle of the 13th century, we find one – handed down mainly under the title De quiditate et esse – dedicated to the presentation of some fundamental notions of metaphysics. This particular question deserves attention insofar as it represents a significant moment in the geneaology of the distinction between the notions of res a ratitudine and res a reor reris. A final (...) remark concerns the possible connection between Albert the Great and Henry of Ghent with respect to the transcendental primacy of res and the attempt not to reduce the consideration of metaphysics to actual being alone. In the mid-14th century, Henry of Herford wrote the Catena aurea entium, a work of remarkable length and composed of ten books – in turn divided into ansae extending over some 5000 questions. The present study aims to analyse some aspects that the recent critical edition of Book VI of the Catena has brought to light: firstly, the dependence on Albert the Great’s De mineralibus and the compilative method used by Henry in the reworking of his sources; secondly, the main (...) philosophical, medical and encyclopedic sources that structure the treatise on minerals (in which metals are also included); and lastly, the author’s personal contribution, especially highlighting the use of vernacular terms and the recounting of personal experiences, which became useful means in explaining certain natural phenomena such as the formation of fossils or the production of images and seals. Analisi sistematica delle citazioni, esplicite e implicite, dalla Philosophia prima di Avicenna nel commento di Alberto alla Metafisica. Fra i problemi più ampiamente discussi si ricordano la conoscenza divina, le anime motrici e il dator formarum rispetto ai quali Alberto si discosta da Avicenna appoggiandosi ad Averroè . L'esame condotto permette all'A. di individuare una sostanziale adesione di Alberto all'ontologia avicenniana e un disaccordo con la cosiddetta parte teologica. Nella parte finale dello studio l'A. esamina il De (...) processu universitatis di Alberto, nel quale l'atteggiamento critico nei confronti della parte teologica si attenua. Quest'ultima opera, il cui secondo libro è un commento al Liber de causis, sembra dipendere dalla Summa di Algazel. Secondo l'esame condotto, la Philosophia prima di Avicenna costituirebbe il modello della connessione che Alberto stabilisce fra la Metafisica di Aristotele e il Liber de causis. Nella conclusione è presentata una tavola delle citazioni. (shrink)

The Averroistic Monopsychism could not be incorporated to the Christian thought to darken the idea of the immortality of the personal soul. Albert the Great, tries to make a synthesis of the Arab doctrines and the Doctrine of Divine Illumination. The conclusion is a proposal -not systematize- but where it is possible to found the distinction at personal level between intellect agent and possible intellect, in analogous way to the distinction essence/act of being.
