In the dialogue Plato portrays a confrontation between Euthyphro, a self-appointed expert on matters divine, who is about to charge his own father with impiety for alleged mistreatment and eventual death of a slave, and Socrates, already charged with impiety, who exploits the coincidence to elicit from Euthyphro certain complexities of the concept of 'piety'.

This is a valuable book, jam-packed with learning and insight, cosmopolitan in scope, timely yet classically anchored. An achievement of intellectual beauty. Although both draw upon Biblical texts to shape the background, Gardner’s existentialism contrasts sharply with the Christianity implicit in Beowulf. This book is concerned with 'how' to think about justice rather than 'what' to think about justice. Its dialectical approach to justice offers a postmodern philosophy which is universal without being absolutist. This stands as an alternative to claims of certainty about justice and to the denials of such certainty in the modern era. to the literary culture of England.

What is good about this book is that it poses an important philosophical question in a context where progress can be made in seeking an answer. At its center is a confrontation between two idealistic philosophers on the metaphysical question of individuality. Hegel and Peirce are placed in opposition, a Peircean model is outlined, and a “new beginning” is sought to which the author believes art might hold the key.
