This paper primarily explores the ethical debate surrounding the use of memory erasure for therapeutic ends. It argues that procedures such as kinase inhibition therapy, which can entail memory erasure in the individual, incur a high cost in terms of the integrity of our individual identities, thus jeopardizing our claim to individual rights and accountability. Therefore, we should reserve such therapies for the extreme cases in which the procedures have the potential to actually restore a person’s autonomy. This paper continues a dialogue that began with an article by Jeffrey Koperski entitled “Two Bad Ways to Attack Intelligent Design and Two Good Ones,” published in the June 2008 issue of Zygon: Journal of Religion and Science. In a response article, Christopher Pynes argues that ad hominem arguments are sometimes legitimate, especially when critiquing Intelligent Design (2012). We show that Pynes’s examples only apply to matters of testimony, not the kinds of arguments found in the best defenses of ID.

Les expériences de pensée impliquant des « excentriques idéalement cohérents » sont généralement présentées dans ce débat comme un argument majeur contre l’internalisme. Je conteste ce point et montre que nos intuitions concernant de telles figures impliquent en réalité une compréhension internaliste de la notion de raisons d’agir. (...) While rooted in careful study of Mead’s original writings and transcribed lectures and the historical context in which that work was carried out, the papers in this volume have brought Mead’s work to bear on contemporary issues in metaphysics, epistemology, cognitive science, and social and political philosophy.

Ethics education is an important goal in higher education overall. It is not clear how well psychology programs are meeting this goal. The American Psychology Association’s Guidelines for the Undergraduate Psychology Major (APA 2013) were created to support high-quality education in psychology. The Guidelines focus on five goals including Ethical and Social Responsibility in a Diverse World. This study is a review of ethics information available online from Franciscan Colleges and Universities. We accessed 24 Franciscan institutions and reviewed the available (...) information provided by 22 of them. We asked several questions: Whether the psychology department provided a mission statement and was ethics addressed in it? What courses focused on ethics or mentioned ethics in their description? Were there other institutional ethics courses required for psychology majors? Was ethics mentioned in the institution mission? The results of this study indicate a need for more intentional inclusion of ethics in university and program mission statements as well as specific courses for the undergraduate psychology major. A number of recent studies have documented rapid changes in behavioural sensory acuity induced by aversive learning in the olfactory and auditory modalities. The effect of aversive learning on the discrimination of low-level features in the visual system of humans remains unclear. Here, we used a psychophysical staircase procedure to estimate discrimination thresholds for oriented grating stimuli, before and after differential aversive learning. We discovered that when a target grating orientation was conditioned with an aversive loud noise, it subsequently led (...) to an improvement of discrimination acuity in nearly all subjects. However, no such change was observed in a control group conditioned to an orientation shifted by ±90° from the target. Our findings cannot be explained by contextual learning or sensitisation factors. The results converge with those reported in the olfactory modality and provide further evidence that early sensory systems can be rapidly modified by recently experienced reinforcement histories. Reimagining a community on the basis of vulnerability entails recognizing our responsibility vis-à-vis those who prosper and those who do not persist because they are abandoned or eliminated. The recognition of our vulnerability allows us to find other forms of community that, built upon the human bonds of protection, escape the abstraction of the value of life, bearing in mind, instead, the socio-political conditions that sustain it, especially when they fail. This is not an easy task in contexts marked by (...) violence. The main issues addressed in this paper are: the recognition of vulnerability, violence as a rupture of interdependence, and our responsibility towards others. Examining our vulnerability can become the cornerstone of another community. (shrink)

Resumen: El etiquetamiento escinde la vida común entre aquellas dignas de ser vividas y las inmeritorias de cualquier consideración sensible, en tanto culpables y condenadas al eterno retorno del pronóstico y la repetición criminal. Este hecho exige repensar la vida humana, a través de otros marcos perceptuales, que desactiven progresivamente los efectos inmunizantes de la estigmatización de aquellas existencias “peligrosas” y, en consecuencia, “indeseables” e “intolerables” para la comunidad. Esta composición tiene como urdimbre teórica los planteamientos del paradigma inmunitario, el (...) etiquetamiento criminal y la crítica como apropiación de la vida humana. Entre las conclusiones que arroja esta reflexión se encuentra que la narración de la existencia constituye una reacción frente a la estigmatización, y, en consecuencia, una inversión del lenguaje inmunitario, en tanto libera al sujeto del devenir monstruoso contenido en la etiqueta criminal, revelando así una humanidad no vista, ni oída, todavía.: Labelling separates the common life between those worthy of being lived and the others of any sensitive consideration, both guilty and condemned to the eternal return of the prognosis and criminal repetition. This fact requires rethinking the human, through other perceptual frameworks progressively deactivating the immunizing effects of stigmatization of those “dangerous” lives and, consequently, “undesirable” and “intolerable” for the community. This article is based on the immune paradigm, criminal labelling, and criticism as appropriation of human life. Among the conclusions that this reflection throws is that the narration of existence constitutes a reaction against stigmatization, and, consequently, an inversion of the immune language, while freeing the subject from the monstrous becoming contained in the criminal label, thus revealing a humanity not seen or heard yet.
