There are at least two importantly different ways for a philosophical theory to account for something. Explanations account for why something exists or occurs or is the way it is. Explications account for what it is for something to exist or occur or be a certain way. Both explanation and explication do important philosophical work. I show what it takes to defend genuine philosophical explanations. The sort of explanation I am interested in is incompatible not only with eliminating the target (...) phenomenon, but also with reducing it to the explanans. I show how explication comes into play in determining whether some phenomenon can plausibly be given either a reductive or eliminative treatment. Explication helps us distinguish certain kinds of reductive and eliminative views, gives us a graded account of the philosophical cost of eliminations, and furnishes us with a certain limit upon what resources an eliminative view can plausibly claim. This last point exposes a defect in a family of eliminative views that seek to retain truths about what they eliminate. Before concluding, I offer a brief defense of common sense as a legitimate, though defeasible, source of philosophical evidence. (shrink)

Narrative analysis, creative writing, and interactive reflective writing have been identified as valuable for professional identity formation and resilience among medical and premedical students alike. This study proposes that medical student blogs are novel pedagogical tools for fostering peer-to-peer learning in academic medicine and are currently underutilized as a near-peer resource for premedical students to learn about the medical profession. To evaluate the pedagogical utility of medical student blogs for introducing core themes in the medical humanities, the authors conducted qualitative (...) analysis of one hundred seventy-six reflective essays by baccalaureate premedical students written in response to medical student-authored narrative blog posts. Using an iterative thematic approach, the authors identified common patterns in the reflective essays, distilled major themes, coded the essays, and conducted narrative analysis through close reading. Qualitative analysis identified three core themes and one overarching theme. The premedical students’ essays demonstrated significant self-reflection in response to near-peer works, discussed their perceptions of medical professionalism, and expressed concerns about their future progress through the medical education system. The essays consistently attributed the impact of the medical student narratives to the authors’ status as near-peers. The authors conclude that reading and engaging in reflective writing about near-peer blog posts encourages premedical students to develop an understanding of core concepts in the medical humanities and promotes their reflection on the profession of medicine. Thus, incorporating online blogs written by medical trainees as narrative works in medical humanities classrooms is a novel pedagogical method for fostering peer-to-peer learning in academic medicine. Ethics guidance increasingly recognises that researchers and sponsors have obligations to consider provisions for post-trial access to interventions that are found to be beneficial in research. Yet, there is little information regarding whether and how such plans can actually be implemented. Understanding practical experiences of developing and implementing these plans is critical to both optimising their implementation and informing conceptual work related to PTA. This viewpoint is informed by experiences with developing and implementing PTA plans for six large-scale multicentre HIV (...) prevention trials supported by the HIV Prevention Trials Network. These experiences suggest that planning and implementing PTA often involve challenges of planning under uncertainty and confronting practical barriers to accessing healthcare systems. Even in relatively favourable circumstances where a tested intervention medication is approved and available in the local healthcare system, system-level barriers can threaten the viability of PTA plans. The aggregate experience across these HIV prevention trials suggests that simply referring participants to local healthcare systems for PTA will not necessarily result in continued access to beneficial interventions for trial participants. Serious commitments to PTA will require additional efforts to learn from future approaches, measuring the success of PTA plans with dedicated follow-up and further developing normative guidance to help research stakeholders navigate the complex practical challenges of realising PTA. Psychologically faithful deep neural networks (DNNs) could be constructed by training with psychophysics data. Moreover, conventional DNNs are mostly monocular vision based, whereas the human brain relies mainly on binocular vision. DNNs developed as smaller vision agent networks associated with fundamental and less intelligent visual activities, can be combined to simulate more intelligent visual activities done by the biological brain.

Hate speech has spread more rapidly through the daily use of technology and, most notably, by sharing your opinions or feelings on social media in a negative aspect. Although numerous works have been carried out in detecting hate speeches in English, German, and other languages, very few works have been carried out in the context of the Bengali language. In contrast, millions of people communicate on social media in Bengali. The few existing works that have been carried out need improvements (...) in both accuracy and interpretability. This article proposed encoder–decoder-based machine learning model, a popular tool in NLP, to classify user’s Bengali comments from Facebook pages. A dataset of 7,425 Bengali comments, consisting of seven distinct categories of hate speeches, was used to train and evaluate our model. For extracting and encoding local features from the comments, 1D convolutional layers were used. Finally, the attention mechanism, LSTM, and GRU-based decoders have been used for predicting hate speech categories. Among the three encoder–decoder algorithms, attention-based decoder obtained the best accuracy (77%). (shrink)

The thesis of the article is that processes of structural political change can be adequately understood only on the basis of a multi-dimensional concept of political legitimacy. It is argued that the most prominent account of the idea, namely Max Weber's typology of legitimate authority, is misleading because of both its incompleteness and its incoherence (II). Drawing on David Beetham, we instead propose to analytically differentiate between three universal, genetically linked dimensions of legitimacy: (1) a basically pragmatic one, (2) a (...) theoretically re flexive, and (3) a performatively expressive dimension (III). By means of this scheme it becomes possible to capture fundamental, regularly violent processes of legitimation, as well as historically different forms of legitimacy. Empirically, the usefulness of our proposal shall be shown by sketching, on the one hand, the formation of “early states”, and the emergence of modern revolutions on the other (IV). (shrink)

El humanismo y la filosofía en el Renacimiento recuperan el ideal de la_ theologia poetica_, esto es, de un saber en el que se ocultaban, bajo un velo alegórico, verdades esenciales de naturaleza místico-religiosa. El poeta es, entonces, un filósofo teólogo, parte esencial de una tradición antigua que sirvió a los fines de la verdadera fe. En este sentido, la restauración del lugar privilegiado de la poética por parte de los humanistas clásicos fue funcional a la filosofía de Marsilio Ficino, (...) un neoplatónico florentino del siglo XV, quien reconocerá en la figura de Orfeo al poeta teólogo por excelencia. Así, a juicio de Ficino, las obras de los poetas revelan la divinidad de manera alegórica bajo la forma de una_ teología poética,_ abriendo la posibilidad de una revelación ontológica de carácter profético. El objetivo del artículo es examinar el papel del furor divino en el pensamiento de Marsilio Ficino en relación con la experiencia mística y la concepción de teología poética. (shrink)

The objective of the article is double. On the one hand, it is aimed at examining the reworking of the Prisca Theologia, by Marsilio Ficino, Florentine neoplatonic of the XV century. That is: a wisdom whose origins date back to the Egypt of the Pharaohs and the Persia of Zoroaster. A millenary tradition that contained within it the doctrines of a true pia philosophia. On the other hand, to analyze the reception of hermeticism in the thought of Ficino and his (...) attempt to generate a concord between christianity and paganism. We consider also that in this attempt, Ficino elaborates along his works three images of Hermes Trismegisto which are condensed in his main purpose, to prove the manifest harmony between the doctrines of the ancient pagan theologians and Christian Theology. Trois voix ou groupes de voix témoignent des Écritures juives au temps de Jésus, tant sur la terre nationale que dans la diaspora de langue grecque: les manuscrits de la Mer Morte, les oeuvres de Philon d'Alexan­drie et les livres du Nouveau Testament. Cette situation littéraire Se présente à la vérité comme contradictoire, révélant une réalité complexe, flottante et incertaine : qu'est-ce qu'on mettait exactement sous les dési­gnations « Prophètes », « David » ou même « Loi de Moïse » (...) ? En-deçà des conceptions canoniques des Écritures enjudaïsme et Christianisme, se révèle un « pluriel textuel » dépendant des besoins de groupes et de communautés, d'habitudes et de conceptions de transmission des textes totalement différentes des nôtres, ce qui explique la grande liberté de Jésus, de ses disciples et des auteurs dans leur utilisation des Écritures, en attendant la fixation de ce qu'on désignera par le mot « Bible ».Three voices or groups of voices witness to the jewish Scriptures both on national territory at the time of Jesus, as well as in the Greek language Diaspora : the Dead Sea Scrolls, the works of Philo of Alexandria, and the books of the New Testament. This literary situation seems contradictory and reveals a complex reality, intangible and uncertain. What exactly is found under the designation « Prophets », « Da­vid », or even « Law of Moses » ? Beyond canonical understanding of the Scriptures in Judaism and Christianity, there lies a « textual plurality » totally different from ours, depending on the needs of groups and communities, and customs and ideas about transmission of texts. This explains the great freedom o Jesus, of his disciples, and some authors in their use of the Scriptures, before the text was to be designated by what would be called the “Bible”. (shrink)

La comparaison des diverses cultures religieuses entre elles permet de discerner le travail original de la foi d’un peuple sur les symbolismes dont il a hérité.In the line traced by the works of Paul Ricœur, familiar to exegetes, biblical hermeneutics should be preoccupied with the connection between human thought and the life of the universe, the rapport of scripture to law and ethics, and the profound harmony of religious thought with symbolic language. Scripture is, indeed, one of the techniques by which human beings, since their origin, assure their control over the universe. Writing serves to codify life in society and the functioning of authority.
