  1. Developing a Framework for Ethical Leadership.Alan Lawton & Iliana Páez - 2015 - Journal of Business Ethics 130 (3):639-649.
Interest in ethical leadership from academics and practitioners has grown enormously in recent years. This article addresses this literature through a framework that identifies three interlocking questions. First, who are ethical leaders and what are their characteristics? Second, how do ethical leaders do what they do? Third, why do leaders do as they do and what are the outcomes of ethical leadership? Different dimensions to ethical leadership are examined and presented as three interlocking circles; Virtues, Purposes and Practices. This framework (...)

Linking Ethical Leadership with Firm Performance: A Multi-dimensional Perspective.Dan Wang, Taiwen Feng & Alan Lawton - 2017 - Journal of Business Ethics 145 (1):95-109.
Despite the importance of ethical leadership, the impacts of its different facets on firm-level performance are unclear. Drawing on the resource-based view of the firm and the group engagement model, we propose that ethical leadership consisting of leader humane orientation, leader responsibility and sustainability orientation and leader moderation orientation are beneficial to firm performance, and leader justice orientation plays moderating roles. We empirically tested this theoretical framework employing multi-source survey data collected from 264 Chinese firms. The findings reveal that both (...)

Misunderstanding Machiavelli in Management: Metaphor, Analogy and Historical Method.Michael Macaulay & Alan Lawton - 2003 - Philosophy of Management 3 (3):17-30.
This article investigates some of the various ways in which theorists have used Machiavelli (and more specifically The Prince) in a business and management context and suggests that the two most common approaches, the use of metaphor and the use of analogy, are both flawed. Metaphor often relies on a reading of Machiavelli that cannot be sustained, whereas analogy takes Machiavelli too far out of historical context. This article discusses how business and management can more usefully incorporate Machiavelli’s ideas by (...)

Organizational Citizenship Behavior and the Public Service Ethos: Whither the Organization? [REVIEW]Julie Rayner, Alan Lawton & Helen M. Williams - 2012 - Journal of Business Ethics 106 (2):117-130.

The adverse impact of such reforms on a public service ethos has been claimed, but rarely demonstrated. Individuals within organizations work beyond their formal contracts of employment, described as Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB), to further organizational interests. Given New Public Management reform and the subsequent contextual changes in the way in which public sector organizations are managed and funded, the present study (...)
