In recent times we are experiencing a new phenomenon with no precedents, that is, the accelerated abandonment of religious beliefs and practices that had otherwise remained valid for centuries and inspired a culture considered hegemonic in great part of the world. In this article, Alejandro Llano traces the roots of this secularization process back to the Enlightenment. Llano maintains that the great paradox of modernity consists in its self-destructive capacity, which epicenter is precisely located in secularization. Against this secular radicalism, (...) The relationship between Catholic physicians and the teaching authority of the Church is inquired into through an exploration of the special relationship which exists between medicine and religion. Evolution of the relationship between Church subject and Church authority, with a view to a correct interpretation of the relationship between the Catholic physician and the Church, is characterized by the healthy, moderate autonomy recognized by the Second Vatican Council.

Alfonso Gómez-Lobo seeks to unravel in this work the ethical doctrines truly taught by Socrates. Without venturing into the complexities of the "historical Socrates," the author offers a brief treatment of the relation of the sources, indicating the problems which they pose and the bases on which he founds his study. Plato's dialogues are evidently the most important ones, although Gómez-Lobo considers Aristotle's testimony to be highly reliable; and to discern among the doctrines contained in the dialogues that which is (...) authentically Socratic, he refers to this latter account. Aristotle's major affirmations regarding Socrates are confirmed fully in the early Platonic dialogues and partially in the dialogues of the middle period. (shrink)
