The US neutrino community gathered at the Workshop on the Intermediate Neutrino Program at Brookhaven National Laboratory February 4-6, 2015 to explore opportunities in neutrino physics over the next five to ten years. Scientists from particle, astroparticle and nuclear physics participated in the workshop. The workshop examined promising opportunities for neutrino physics in the intermediate term, including possible new small to mid-scale experiments, US contributions to large experiments, upgrades to existing experiments, R&D plans and theory. The workshop was organized into (...)

    A parsimonious model of subjective life expectancy.A. Ludwig & A. Zimper - 2013 - Theory and Decision 75 (4):519-541.
On average, “young” people underestimate whereas “old” people overestimate their chances to survive into the future. Such subjective survival beliefs violate the rational expectations paradigm and are also not in line with models of rational Bayesian learning. In order to explain these empirical patterns in a parsimonious manner, we assume that self-reported beliefs express likelihood insensitivity and can, therefore, be modeled as non-additive beliefs. In a next step we introduce a closed form model of Bayesian learning for non-additive beliefs which (...)

    A quantitative assessment of the three-dimensional microstructure of a γ-γ ′ alloy.A. Lund & P. Voorhees - 2003 - Philosophical Magazine 83 (14):1719-1733.
We present the first quantitative analysis of the three-dimensional microstructure of a n - n ' alloy that does not make any a priori assumptions about the n '-particle morphologies. The n '-particle size distribution is derived using the particle volumes to provide a measure of the particle sizes that is independent of particle morphology and is found to be somewhat broader and to have a lower maximum peak height than the theoretical prediction in the absence of elastic stress. Non-equiaxed (...)

    Time as a Category of Sociohistorical Being.A. N. Loy & E. V. Shinkaruk - 1980 - Russian Studies in Philosophy 19 (2):3-26.
For a long period, no attention was paid in our literature to the circumstance that space and time, as fundamental forms of the existence of matter, cannot be reduced to the characteristics of space and time as viewed in physics. Nor was the fact taken into consideration that sociohistorical being is no less real than the existence of physical things, that the activity of human society is no less objective than the physical interactions of the material world.

A Madhyamaka Analysis of the Property View and the Essence View of Existence.A. K. Jayesh - 2020 - Journal of the Indian Council of Philosophical Research 38 (1):1-5.
In this paper, I try to demonstrate a problem with two medieval European views of existence: The property view and the essence view. Adopting a style of reasoning employed by the Indian Madhyamaka philosopher Nāgārjuna, I argue that both the property view and the essence view understand the relation between an object and its existence in terms of difference: The former understands the difference as the difference between an object and its property of existence, and the latter, as the difference (...)

    Self-improvement in a complex cybernetic system and its implications for biology.A. Gecow & A. Hoffman - 1983 - Acta Biotheoretica 32 (1):61-71.
It is commonly accepted by those who consider macroevolution as a process decoupled from microevolution that its apparent jerkiness (and, hence, incompatibility with principles of population genetics) results from the structural complexity of epigenetic systems, since all complex cybernetic systems are expected to behave discontinuously. To analyse the validity of this assumption, the process of self-improvement has been analysed in a complex cybernetic system by means of computer simulations. It turns out that the investigated system tends to develop by accumulation (...)

Manipulativeness degree as a function of the dichotomy “oral speech – written speech”.A. Getsov - 2013 - Liberal Arts in Russia 2 (4):342.
The article discusses mechanisms of manipulative influence on a theoretical basis of suggestion and on the actual material of Bulgarian press. The author supposes that adequate research requires integrated approach with symbiosis of techniques of cognitive science, linguistic pragmatics, psycholinguistics and the theory of speech activity. Manipulative action takes place not only through language (explicit and implicit), but also non-verbal instruments that have different range, different pragmatic potential, etc. The necessity of a comprehensive analysis of the hidden manipulative influence on (...)

Legacy of a Great Thinker. Editorial for the Commemorative Issue for Ernst von Glasersfeld.A. Riegler & H. Gash - 2011 - Constructivist Foundations 6 (2):135-137.
Context: On 12 November 2010, Ernst von Glasersfeld passed away. He was one of the most important, if not the most important, proponents of constructivist philosophy. Problem: In his life Ernst influenced many other scientists and philosophers. By whom was he himself influenced; who shaped his intellectual development? By collecting contributions from those who knew him closely or have an excellent understanding of radical constructvism we aim at presenting a cartography of the past and current state of affairs of radical (...)

    A Sufi Martyr: The Apologia of 'Ain Al-Qudat Al-Hamadhani.A. J. Arberry - 1969 - Routledge.
Originally published in 1969. This volume was composed by an eminent Sufi mystic whilst in prison in Baghdad, awaiting execution, in a vain attempt to overthrow his sentence; he was put to death in AD 1311 at the age of 33. This apologia is a document of great poignancy, composed in most elegant Arabic and translated with the customary skill and elegance for which A J Arberry became so well-known.
