  1. Critical realism: an introduction to Roy Bhaskar's philosophy.Andrew Collier - 1994 - New York: Verso.
This book expounds the transcendental realist theory of science and critical naturalist social philosophy that have been developed by Bhaskar and are used by many contemporary social scientists. It defends Bhaskar's view that the possibility and necessity of experiment show that reality is structured and stratified, his use of this idea to develop a non-reductive explanatory account of human sciences, and his notion that to explain social structures can sometimes be to criticize them. After a discussion of the uses of (...)
  2. Critical Realism.Andrew Collier - 1990 - International Studies in Philosophy 20 (2):120-122.
A review article on two books by Roy Bhaskar: Reclaiming Reality: A Critical Introduction to Contemporary Philosophy (London: Verso, 1989), & The Possibility of Naturalism: A Philosophical Critique of the Human Sciences (2nd Edition, Harvester Wheatsheaf: London, 1989 see listings in IRPS No. 56). Bhaskar portrays critical realism as insisting on "the primacy of being over knowledge" & argues for the emancipatory consequences of this position. His philosophy distinguishes between intransitive & transitive domains & between open & closed systems, & (...)

Being and worth.Andrew Collier - 1999 - New York: Routledge.
In Being and Worth Andrew Collier argues that beings both in the natural and human worlds have worth in themselves, whether we recognize it or not. He builds on recent work in critical realism to provide a reassessment of Spinoza's philosophy of mind and ethics. Conclusions are developed with particular reference to environmental ethics.

In Defence of Objectivity.Andrew Collier - 2003 - New York: Routledge.
This volume addresses the interlocking themes of realism, objectivity, existentialism and politics, based on critical realism. However, it moves beyond the purely scientific orientation of earlier contributions to this philosophy, to further develop the themes. The title essay defends objectivity in science, everyday knowledge, and ethics, and examines both subjective idealism and existentialist critiques of objectivity. The other essays examine some of the same themes but from different angles, keeping the politics of the issues at the forefront.

On Christian belief: a defence of a cognitive conception of religious belief in a Christian context.Andrew Collier - 2003 - New York: Routledge.
On Christian Belief offers a defense of realism in the philosophy of religion. It argues that religious belief--with particular reference to Christian belief--unlike any other kind of belief, is cognitive; making claims about what is real, and open to rational discussion between believers and non-believers. The author begins by providing a critique of several views which either try to describe a faith without cognitive context, or to justify believing on non-cognitive grounds. He then discusses what sense can be made of (...)

Christianity and Marxism: A Philosophical Contribution to Their Reconciliation.Andrew Collier - 2007 - Routledge.
Andrew Collier analyses recent cooperation between Christianity and Marxism after earlier years of antagonism. He first discusses the nature of Christianity and Marxism and their place amongst contemporary world views, before looking at areas of apparent conflict and possible reconciliation. This groundbreaking work will be of interest to those involved in philosophy, theology, politics and Marxism.

Christianity and Marxism: A Philosophical Contribution to Their Reconciliation.Andrew Collier - 2001 - Routledge.
Christians and Marxists have co-operated in various forms of political work in recent decades, and, after earlier years of antagonism, thinkers on both sides have come to take the other seriously. The aim of this book is to get Christianity and Marxism to meet on terrain on which they might seem most opposed: their philosophical positions; and to do so without watering either down, but taking then full strength.

Scientific Socialism and The Question of Socialist Values.Andrew Collier - 1981 - Canadian Journal of Philosophy, Supplementary Volume 7:121-154.
The dominant view among academic political philosophers in the English speaking world is that radical political differences, such as those between socialists and non-socialists, are in the last analysis differences of value-judgment, or ‘ideals,’ or ‘principles.’ Few perhaps would now endorse the view of Weldon that the Marxist's espousal of common ownership and the liberal's of private enterprise are ultimate, unarguable principles — as if the entire economic work of Karl Marx or W.S. Jevons could be reduced to sets of (...)

Defending objectivity: essays in honour of Andrew Collier.Andrew Collier, Margaret Scotford Archer & William Outhwaite (eds.) - 2004 - New York: Routledge.
Andrew Collier is the boldest defender of objectivity - in science, knowledge, thought, action, politics, morality and religion. In this tribute and acknowledgement of the influence his work has had on a wide readership, his colleagues show that they have been stimulated by his thinking and offer challenging responses. This wide-ranging book covers key areas with which defenders of objectivity often have to engage. Sections are devoted to the following: 'objectivity of value', 'objectivity and everyday knowledge', 'objectivity in political economy', (...)

In defence of objectivity and other essays: on realism, existentialism and politics.Andrew Collier - 2003 - New York: Routledge.
This volume develops and defends critical realism whilst engaging critically with existentialist philosophy in a number of ways. The work of existentialist thinkers as diverse as Kierkegarrd, R.D. Laing, Heideggar and Sartre is discussed at length and Andrew Collier argues that there is much to be learnt from their work, especially in Heidegger's critique of the technological view of the world. However the book concludes with a defence of objectivity against the various forms of subjectivism advanced by the existentialists.

    Identifying Human Naïve Pluripotent Stem Cells − Evaluating State‐Specific Reporter Lines and Cell‐Surface Markers.Amanda J. Collier & Peter J. Rugg-Gunn - 2018 - Bioessays 40 (5):1700239.
Recent reports that human pluripotent stem cells can be captured in a spectrum of states with variable properties has prompted a re‐evaluation of how pluripotency is acquired and stabilised. The latest additions to the stem cell hierarchy open up opportunities for understanding human development, reprogramming, and cell state transitions more generally. Many of the new cell lines have been collectively termed ‘naïve’ human pluripotent stem cells to distinguish them from the conventional ‘primed’ cells. Here, several transcriptional and epigenetic hallmarks of (...)
