Universality of functional systems and totality of their elements – the limits of conflict and mutual influence.Jerzy Mycka - 2017 - Philosophical Problems in Science 63:31-58.
The article presents several examples of different mathematical structures and interprets their properties related to the existence of universal functions. In this context, relations between the problem of totality of elements and possible forms of universal functions are analyzed. Furthermore, some global and local aspects of the mentioned functional systems are distinguished and compared. In addition, the paper attempts to link universality and totality with the dynamic and static properties of mathematical objects and to consider the problem of (...)

    Chemical elements, discoveries, and disputes: Eric Scerri: A tale of 7 elements. New York: Oxford University Press, 2013, xxxiii+270pp, $19.95, £12.99 HB.Helge Kragh - 2013 - Metascience 23 (2):373-375.
Among the subjects that attract historians of chemistry and philosophers of chemistry alike are the chemical elements and their classification within the periodic system. In 2007, Eric Scerri, a distinguished philosopher of the chemical sciences, published The Periodic Table (Oxford University Press), a comprehensive and critical account of the subject. He describes the present work as “a follow-up book,” and a few of the chapters are indeed condensed versions of chapters appearing in the 2007 book. Nonetheless, A Tale of 7 (...)

    The Elements of the Physical Universe.Paul Weiss - 1961 - Review of Metaphysics 15 (1):3 - 18.
Our inquiry begins, as it must, with the robust, familiar world of everyday, for one can start only from the place where one in fact is. We are now in a room where there are men and women, tables and chairs, pens, pencils, and books, dust, light, wood, and metal. Those who, with Descartes and Hume, try to ignore or cancel out that world, not only seek to reject what they themselves presuppose, but deny themselves and others the right to (...)

  19. What is an Element? Oxford University Press, 2020.Eric Scerri (ed.) - 2020 - New York, NY, USA: Oxford University Press.
The concept of a chemical element is foundational within the field of chemistry, but there is wide disagreement over its definition. Even the International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) claims two distinct definitions: a species of atoms versus one which identifies chemical elements with the simple substances bearing their names. The double definition of elements proposed by the International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry contrasts an abstract meaning and an operational one. Nevertheless, the philosophical aspects of (...)

Elements of moral cognition: Rawls' linguistic analogy and the cognitive science of moral and legal judgment.John M. Mikhail - 2009 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
The aim of the dissertation is to formulate a research program in moral cognition modeled on aspects of Universal Grammar and organized around three classic problems in moral epistemology: What constitutes moral knowledge? How is moral knowledge acquired? How is moral knowledge put to use? Drawing on the work of Rawls and Chomsky, a framework for investigating -- is proposed. The framework is defended against a range of philosophical objections and contrasted with the approach of developmentalists like Piaget and (...)

Two books of the Elements of universal jurispurdence.Samuel Pufendorf - 1931 - Indianapolis: Liberty Fund. Edited by William Abbott Oldfather & Thomas Behme.
This was Pufendorf's first work, published in 1660. Its appearance effectively inaugurated the modern natural-law movement in the German-speaking world. The work also established Pufendorf as a key figure and laid the foundations for his major works, which were to sweep across Europe and North America. Pufendorf rejected the concept of natural rights as liberties and the suggestion that political government is justified by its protection of such rights, arguing instead for a principled limit to the state's role in human (...)

    The Universe:a Philosophical derivation of a Final Theory.John F. Thompson - manuscript
The reason for physics’ failure to find a final theory of the universe is examined. Problems identified are: the lack of unequivocal definitions for its fundamental elements (time, length, mass, electric charge, energy, work, matter-waves); the danger of relying too much on mathematics for solutions; especially as philosophical arguments conclude the universe cannot have a mathematical basis. It does not even need the concept of number to exist. Numbers and mathematics are human inventions arising from the human predilection for measurement. (...)

The iconic status of the periodic table of the elements has been recognized by a variety of prominent chemists and historians of science. For example, John Emsley proclaimed: “As long as chemistry is studied there will be a periodic table. And even if someday we communicate with another part of the universe, we can be sure that one thing that both cultures will have in common is an ordered system of the elements that will be instantly recognizable by both intelligent (...)

From Schmidtz, one might expect a theory of justice, basically along libertarian lines. The book may surprise, though not disappoint, for that is not quite what one would find. Instead, the title is apt. Schmidtz says that there is a terrain of justice, the terrain of what people are due, and it has a certain kind of unity.
