Respectful Agents: Between the Scylla and Charybdis of Cultural and Moral Incapacity.Michelle Schut & René Moelker - 2015 - Journal of Military Ethics 14 (3-4):232-246.
ABSTRACTRespect in morally and culturally critical situations during military missions is complex and loaded with ambiguity. Respect seems a desirable and positive cross-cultural competence. It is assumed and expected that respectful action serves the objectives of the mission and contributes to the perceived legitimacy of the military. However, by respecting ‘the others’ culture’ too much, one can neglect one's own values and sideline one's own ethical point of view. We conducted a qualitative study in which we extracted 121 morally and (...)

Emotional Reactions and Moral Judgment: The Effects of Morally Challenging Interactions in Military Operations.Miriam C. de Graaff, Michelle Schut, Desiree E. M. Verweij, Eric Vermetten & Ellen Giebels - 2016 - Ethics and Behavior 26 (1):14-31.
This study explores the association between different types of morally challenging interactions during military deployment and response strategies, as well as the mediating role of moral emotions. Interviews with Dutch servicemen who participated in military operations were content coded. We found a relationship between local-cultural and team-related interactions and moral justification; these effects were mediated by other-condemning emotions. Similarly, other-condemning emotions mediated the relationship between local-cultural interactions and relativism. This study points at the importance of other-condemning emotions in shaping military (...)

Contagious itch: what we know and what we would like to know.C. Schut, S. Grossman, U. Gieler, J. Kupfer & G. Yosipovitch - 2015 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 9:119849.
All humans experience itch in the course of their life. Even a discussion on the topic of itch or seeing people scratch can evoke the desire to scratch. These events are coined ‘contagious itch’ and are very common. We and others have shown that videos showing people scratching and pictures of affected skin or insects can induce itch in healthy persons and chronic itch patients. In our studies, patients with atopic dermatitis were more susceptible to visual itch cues than healthy. (...)

  7. Formal analysis of dynamics within philosophy of mind by computer simulation.Tibor Bosse, Martijn C. Schut & Jan Treur - 2009 - Minds and Machines 19 (4):543-555.
Computer simulations can be useful tools to support philosophers in validating their theories, especially when these theories concern phenomena showing nontrivial dynamics. Such theories are usually informal, whilst for computer simulation a formally described model is needed. In this paper, a methodology is proposed to gradually formalise philosophical theories in terms of logically formalised dynamic properties. One outcome of this process is an executable logic-based temporal specification, which within a dedicated software environment can be used as a simulation model to (...)

The discursive transformation of grief throughout history.Janni Dahlgaard Gravesen & Regner Birkelund - 2021 - Nursing Philosophy 22 (3):e12351.
In recent decades, the phenomenon of grief, when you lose a loved one, has been the subject of exploration and discussion among researchers. Because of this, prolonged grief is now recognized as a possible mental disorder as the latest version of the diagnosis manual; ‘International Classification of Diseases’ (ICD‐11) being published in 2018 is featuring a new diagnosis called ‘prolonged grief disorder’. The commencement of this new disorder indicates a shift in the way grief is being articulated why the notion (...)
