This article poses a response to one argument supporting the force feeding of political prisoners. This argument assumes that prisoners have moral autonomy and thus cannot be force fed in the early stages of their hunger strike. However, as their fasting progresses, their cognitive competence declines, and they are no longer autonomous. Since they are no longer autonomous, force feeding becomes justified. This article questions the recurrent citation of a paper in empirical support of the claim that hunger strike causes (...) mental disorders or cognitive impairments. The paper, written by Daniel Fessler, partially relies on the Minnesota Starvation Experiment conducted in 1944 to 1945 for scientific support. Using widely accepted criteria for assessing the ethical acceptability of clinical research, we argue that the Minnesota Starvation Experiment had significant scientific shortcomings and is a case of unethical research. From this, we question the appropriateness of citing the Minnesota Starvation Experiment and consequently Fessler’s paper. If Citing Fessler’s paper becomes problematic, this particular argument for the force feeding of prisoners loses much of its strength. (shrink)

This study addresses the Minnesota News Council's moral authority-that is, its ability to serve as a referent for the ethical or moral choices of others-and how its authority might be affected by perceptions of its legitimacy. After analyzing all of the Council's 125 written determinations, we argue that the Council's legitimacy and authority could be enlarged by clearer statements of ethical principles, explicit expressions of standards of conduct, and more consistent references to past determinations.

The project's wealth of images provides a multifaceted look at lives and landscapes in Minnesota, focusing on common experiences and themes among a diverse population of individuals. Edited by photography historian George Slade, the book features a selection of the photographs, a lucid interpretive essay by Slade and art historian Robert Silberman, a preface by exhibition curator Bonnie G. Wilson, and brief introductions to and commentaries about each photographer's work. The Court of Appeals of Minnesota, in State v. Saunders ), held that the statutory offense of practicing medicine without a license was not unconstitutionally vague as applied to a claim involving a farmer who offered a home remedy to cure cancer. The court held that, although Minnesota Statute § 147.081 subd. 3 contains general language and undefined terms, the statute contains sufficient particularity to show ordinary persons what conduct is prohibited, and thereby passes the void-for-vagueness test. The (...) court stated that, according to the statute, while a person holding a license to practice medicine is permitted to engage in a broad range of conduct, those without that license are proscribed from engaging in that same range of conduct.The defendant, Mr. Saunders, a dairy farmer, claimed that he could cure ill people by injecting an ill person's blood into a cow and then feeding that person the cow's colostrum. This third volume of the Minnesota series differs from the first two in its greater emphasis on the methodology of the physical sciences. Most of the interest of these earlier volumes was directed to an analysis of the concepts of psychology, psycho-analysis, and the philosophy of mind. The concept of scientific explanation is here analyzed in successive papers by Feyerabend, Hempel, Scriven, and Brodbeck; and the problem of the status of theoretical entities in science is treated by Maxwell and (...) Rozeboom. The volume closes with two lengthy articles on problems surrounding the concepts of space and time. The first, by A. Grünbaum, makes a thorough attempt to resolve the problem of conventionalism in physical science; and the other, a detailed analysis by W. Sellars, examines the concepts of existence, becoming, event, and truth in their relationships to the concept of time. This important addition to the Minnesota series confirms the impression of the earlier volumes, that, although the contributors differ in details, they share the common goal of formulating, with the tools of modern logical and linguistic analysis, a reasonable empiricist interpretation of modern science which will avoid the dogmas and crudities of the empiricisms as well as the rationalisms of the past.--R.
