Dans cette etude, qui etait a l'origine sa these de doctorat, Canguilhem retrace les etapes historiques de la formation du concept de reflexe au cours des XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles, c'est-a-dire depuis les premieres experimentations sur les relations entre systeme nerveux et systeme musculaire, jusqu'a la formulation theorique du mouvement involontaire animal, a l'epoque moderne. Loin de se reduire au resultat de decouvertes specifiques, et encore moins attribuable a une figure unique de la pensee scientifique, le concept de reflexe s'articule (...) au fil d'une histoire conceptuelle riche et complexe, en opposition a la conception mecaniste du vivant heritee de Descartes. C'est cette histoire que Canguilhem nous livre dans ses mutiples sources et filiations, en explorant les travaux de physiologues et biologistes tels que Willis, Haller, Unzer et Pochaska: un exercice exemplaire - et devenu desormais classique - d'histoire des sciences et d'epistemologie. On devra le juger au terme même de cette organisation, après son effort synthétique, après son travail de mise en ordre. Il y a peu de justice à le taxer d'incapacité à propos d'une analyse de ce qu'il prend comme éléments de sa construction. This 1983 book is a lively and clearly written introduction to the philosophy of natural science, organized around the central theme of scientific realism. It has two parts. 'Representing' deals with the different philosophical accounts of scientific objectivity and the reality of scientific entities. The views of Kuhn, Feyerabend, Lakatos, Putnam, van Fraassen, and others, are all considered. 'Intervening' presents the first sustained treatment of experimental science for many years and uses it to give a new direction to debates about (...) realism. Hacking illustrates how experimentation often has a life independent of theory. He argues that although the philosophical problems of scientific realism can not be resolved when put in terms of theory alone, a sound philosophy of experiment provides compelling grounds for a realistic attitude. A great many scientific examples are described in both parts of the book, which also includes lucid expositions of recent high energy physics and a remarkable chapter on the microscope in cell biology. In this book van Fraassen develops an alternative to scientific realism by constructing and evaluating three mutually reinforcing theories.

: The increasing attention on experiment in the last two decades has led to important insights into its material, cultural and social dimensions. However, the role of experiment as a tool for generating knowledge has been comparatively poorly studied. What questions are asked in experimental research? How are they treated and eventually resolved? And how do questions, epistemic situations, and experimental activity cohere and shape each other? In my paper, I treat these problems on the basis of detailed studies of (...) research practice. After presenting several cases from the history of electricity—Dufay, Ampère, and Faraday—I discuss a specific type of experiment—the "exploratory experiment"—and analyze how it works in concept formation. I argue that a fuller understanding of experiment can only be achieved by intertwining historical and philosophical perspectives in such a way that the very separation of the two become questioable. The goal of the present article is to contribute to the epistemology and methodology of computer simulations. The central thesis is that the process of simulation modeling takes the form of an explorative cooperation between experimenting and modeling. The ArgumentBehind the dispute over the relative priority of theory and experiment lie conflicting philosophical images of the nature of scientific inquiry. One crucial image arose in the 1920s, when the logical positivists agitated for a “unity of science” that would ground all meaningful scientific activity on an observational foundation. Their goals and rhetoric dovetailed with the larger movements of architectural, literary, and philosophical modernism. Historians of science followed the positivists by tracking experimental science as the basis for scientific progress. (...) After World War II, historians and philosophers of science created an antipositivist movement, inverting the positivist idea that observation had epistemic priority. But this counter-movement retained the modernist aspiration to unity, now chaining observation to theory. Once again historians of science, following their philosophical colleagues, illustrated the new modernism with historical instances of observation dominated by theory.Either reductionist scheme, by privileging one activity over the other, dictates an overly constrictive periodization. We need a wider class of periodization models that will allow instrumentation, experimentation, and theory a partial autonomy without granting any one the sole legitimate narrative standpoint. Such a heterogeneous representation of historical traditions may, surprisingly, make better sense of the perceived coherence of activity across theoretical transitions than the monolithic modernist representation of science it displaces. Analysts of science were asked to pay attention to scientific practices in meticulous detail and along multiple dimensions, including the material, social and psychological. Following this turn, the interest in scientific practices continued to increase and had an indelible influence in the various fields of science studies. No doubt, the practice turn changed our conceptions and approaches of science, but (...) what did it really teach us? What does it mean to study scientific practices? What are the general lessons, implications, and new challenges? This volume explores questions about the practice turn using both case studies and theoretical analysis. The case studies examine empirical and mathematical sciences, including the engineering sciences. This text provides a critique of the subjective Bayesian view of statistical inference, and proposes the author's own error-statistical approach as an alternative framework for the epistemology of experiment. It seeks to address the needs of researchers who work with statistical analysis.

What role have experiments played, and should they play, in physics? How does one come to believe rationally in experimental results? The Neglect of Experiment attempts to provide answers to both of these questions. Professor Franklin's approach combines the detailed study of four episodes in the history of twentieth century physics with an examination of some of the philosophical issues involved. The episodes are the discovery of parity nonconservation in the 1950s; the nondiscovery of parity nonconservation in the 1930s, when (...) the results of experiments indicated, at least in retrospect, the symmetry violation, but the significance of those results was not realized; the discovery and acceptance of CP symmetry; and Millikan's oil-drop experiment. Franklin examines the various roles that experiment plays, including its role in deciding between competing theories, confirming theories, and calling fo new theories. The author argues that one can provide a philosophical justification for these roles. He contends that if experiment plays such important roles, then one must have good reason to believe in experimental results. He then deals with deveral problems concerning such reslults, including the epistemology of experiment, how one comes to believe rationally in experimental results, the question of the influence of theoretical presuppositions on results, and the problem of scientific fruad. This original and important contribution to the study of the philosophy of experimental science is an outgrowth of many years of research. Franklin brings to this work more than a decade of experience as an experimental high-energy physicist, along with his significant contributions to the history and philosophy of science. (shrink)

L'automatisation des taches, le remplacement et la transformation des support ont bouleverse l'antique probleme de la moisson des donnees, celui de la Memoire culturelle. Il ne suffit pas de collecter, il faut classer et soumettre a une grille d'apprehension, qu'on ne cesse pas d'affiner, toutes les informations recueillies. Apres quoi, de cette savante mise en forme jailliront des conclusions: ce traitement qualificatif permet deja de regenerer le savoir. A partir d'exemples, l'auteur tente de degager et d'illustrer ce triplet a) enregistrer (...) ou capter; b) concentrer et organiser et c) ameliorer et transfigurer des messages. L'art lui-meme est touche, autant que la science ou la societe, par cette methode generale de la Collection. Ainsi, le Musee, malgre ses detracteurs, ne sert pas a recapituler le passe, mais precisement a empecher son retour, a indiquer les chemins explores qu'on ne peut plus emprunter. S'il nous montre la vie etincelante d'hier, il nous incite moins a la ressusciter qu'a la prolonger. Dans ce premier écrit qu’est sa thèse principale , Bachelard étudie le processus d’affinement de la connaissance scientifique.Le rôle de la connaissance approchée est défini dans les sciences expérimentales, où le degré de précision, confronté au contingent et à l’indivisible, atteint nécessairement une limite; ainsi que dans les sciences mathématiques qui, soumises à ce même « fractionnement épistémologique et ontologique », se prêtent néanmoins à une approximation illimitée, puisque l’infini mathématique permet de créer toujours de nouveaux êtres irrationnels assurant la (...) continuité de l’indéfini des nombres rationnels.Par conséquent, on atteint jamais qu’un fait rectifié et provisoire. The authors provide an overview of philosophical discussions about the roles of experiment in science. First, they cover two approaches that took shape under the heading of “new experimentalism” in the 1980s and 1990s. One approach was primarily concerned with questions about entity realism, robustness, and epistemological strategies. The other has focused on exploratory experiments and the dynamic processes of experimental research as such, highlighting its iterative nature and drawing out the ways in which such research is grounded in experimental (...) systems, concepts and operational definitions.
