  1. Norbert Wiener as pragmatist.John Durham Peters & Benjamin Peters - 2016 - Empedocles: European Journal for the Philosophy of Communication 7 (2):157-172.
In this article we argue that Norbert Wiener, the mathematician and founder of cybernetics, can be considered a philosophical pragmatist. The article outlines his open yet limited relativism, his voluntary finitist theodicy, his reconfiguring of the divide between biology and technology, and his conception of message as organization. We argue these points resonate both with the thinking of Peirce, James and Royce and with ongoing problems in communication theory, especially the reconsideration of transmission.

  • How We Became Our Data: A Genealogy of the Informational Person.Colin Koopman - 2019 - Chicago, IL, USA: University of Chicago Press.
We are now acutely aware, as if all of the sudden, that data matters enormously to how we live. How did information come to be so integral to what we can do? How did we become people who effortlessly present our lives in social media profiles and who are meticulously recorded in state surveillance dossiers and online marketing databases? What is the story behind data coming to matter so much to who we are? -/- In How We Became Our Data, (...)

  • Can an Algorithm be Agonistic? Ten Scenes from Life in Calculated Publics.Kate Crawford - 2016 - Science, Technology, and Human Values 41 (1):77-92.
This paper explores how political theory may help us map algorithmic logics against different visions of the political. Drawing on Chantal Mouffe’s theories of agonistic pluralism, this paper depicts algorithms in public life in ten distinct scenes, in order to ask the question, what kinds of politics do they instantiate? Algorithms are working within highly contested online spaces of public discourse, such as YouTube and Facebook, where incompatible perspectives coexist. Yet algorithms are designed to produce clear “winners” from information contests, (...)

  • How We Became Posthuman: Virtual Bodies in Cybernetics, Literature, and Informatics.N. Katherine Hayles - 1999 - University of Chicago Press.
In this age of DNA computers and artificial intelligence, information is becoming disembodied even as the "bodies" that once carried it vanish into virtuality. While some marvel at these changes, envisioning consciousness downloaded into a computer or humans "beamed" _Star Trek_-style, others view them with horror, seeing monsters brooding in the machines. In _How We Became Posthuman,_ N. Katherine Hayles separates hype from fact, investigating the fate of embodiment in an information age. Hayles relates three interwoven stories: how information lost (...)

  • Genealogy as Critique: Foucault and the Problems of Modernity.Colin Koopman - 2013 - Bloomington: Indiana University Press.
Viewing Foucault in the light of work by Continental and American philosophers, most notably Nietzsche, Habermas, Deleuze, Richard Rorty, Bernard Williams, and Ian Hacking, Genealogy as Critique shows that philosophical genealogy involves not only the critique of modernity but also its transformation. Colin Koopman engages genealogy as a philosophical tradition and a method for understanding the complex histories of our present social and cultural conditions. He explains how our understanding of Foucault can benefit from productive dialogue with philosophical allies to (...)
