This volume consists of the first of the John Dewey Lectures delivered under the auspices of Columbia University's Philosophy Department as well as other essays by the author. Intended to clarify the meaning of the philosophical doctrines propounded by Professor Quine in 'Word and Objects', the essays included herein both support and expand those doctrines.

This book clarifies Husserl's notion of perceptual experience as "immediate" or "direct" with respect to its purported object, and outlines his theory of evidence. In particular, it focuses on Husserl's account of our perceptual experience of time, an aspect of perception rarely noted in', recent philosophical literature, yet which must be taken into consideration if an adequate account of perception is to be provided. Perhaps equally important, there is a new wave of work in phenomenology (and intentionality), reflecting a synthesis (...) of phenomenological and analytic philosophy, Miller's book is an important contribution to that "new wave," and has a significant bearing on contemporary issues in cognitive science. I am drawn to a conjecture that I cannot rightly confirm in textual terms, though it cannot be far from the mark as a general philosophical claim: it leads very naturally to the recovery of a neglected picture of the human sciences. I have in mind a reading that goes against the two main analyses Western philosophies have featured in the second half of the nineteenth century and the whole of the twentieth regarding the relationship between the physical and the (...) human sciences: namely, the conviction, favored by positivism and the unity of science program, to the effect that the materialist and extensionalist methodology fitted to the physical sciences— more or less along the lines pressed by Rudolf Carnap and Carl Hempel—should fit the human sciences as well, if we intend to count them as proper sciences; and the alternative conviction, now often dubbed hermeneutic, more or less regularized from Wilhelm Dilthey’s analysis along Kantian lines—which admits a cognate development in the empiricist tradition, as in John Stuart Mill’s account—that sharply disjoins the natural and human sciences as very different kinds of science. In contemporary philosophical debates in the United States "redefining pragmatism" has become the conventional way to flag significant philosophical contests and to launch large conceptual and programmatic changes. This book analyzes the contributions of such developments in light of the classic formulations of Charles S. Peirce and John Dewey and the interaction between pragmatism and analytic philosophy. American pragmatism was revived quite unexpectedly in the 1970s by Richard Rorty's philosophical heterodoxy and his running dispute with Hilary Putnam, who, like Rorty, (...) is a professed Deweyan. Reinventing Pragmatism examines the force of the new pragmatisms, from the emergence of Rorty's and Putnam's basic disagreements of the 1970s until the turn of the century. Joseph Margolis considers the revival of a movement generally thought to have ended by the 1950s as both a surprise and a turn of great importance. The quarrel between Rorty and Putnam obliged American philosophers, and eventually Eurocentric philosophy as a whole, to reconsider the direction of American and European philosophy, for instance in terms of competing accounts of realism and naturalism.
