As we navigate through life, we model time as flowing, the present as special, and the past as “dead.” This model of time—manifest time—develops in childhood and later thoroughly infiltrates our language, thought, and behavior. It is part of what makes a human life recognizably human. Yet if physics is correct, this model of the world is deeply mistaken. This book is about this conflict between manifest and physical time. The first half dives into the physics and philosophy to establish (...) the conflict’s existence; but it also argues that the claim that physics “spatializes” time is overstated. Rather, even relativity theory makes time special in deep and significant ways. The second half turns to psychology, biology, and more, seeking to understand why creatures like us develop manifest time. “Supposing that truth is a women-what then?” This is the very first sentence in Nietzsche’s Beyond Good and Evil . The Philosophy of Time Society grew out of a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar on the Philosophy of Time offered by George Schlesinger in 1991. The members of that seminar wanted to promote interest in the philosophy of time and Jon N. Turgerson offered to become the first Director of the society with the initial costs underwritten by the Drake University Center for the Humanities. Thus, the Philosophy of Time Society (PTS) was formed in 1993. Its goal is (...) to promote the study of the philosophy of time from a broad analytic perspective, and to provide a forum as an affiliated group with the American Philosophical Association, to discuss the issues in and related to the philosophy of time. The society held its first meeting during the Eastern Division of the AP A in Atlanta, George, in December 1993. In 1997 I began my tenure as Executive Director of PTS and with my term ending in 2000, I decided to put together a volume of selected papers read at PTS meetings over the years. The result is the present volume. It contains some of the latest developments in the field, including discussions of recent books by Michael Tooley, Time, Tense, and Causation, and D. H. Mellor, Real Time II, and much more. The main issue in the philosophy of time is and remains the status of temporal becoming and the passage of time. (shrink)

Статья является откликом на недавний сорок третий доклад Римскому клубу, подготовленный к его полувековому юбилею. Отмечается специфика данного доклада, в котором главный акцент делается не только на анализе современных глобальных проблем, но и на их источнике – мировоззренческом кризисе. Многократно отмечавшиеся в предыдущих докладах глобальные риски и угрозы самому существованию человечества могут быть преодолены лишь на основе радикального изменения мировоззрения, а именно «нового Просвещения». Мир настолько изменился в результате деятельности человека, что более нет простора для экстенсивного развития. Отныне это «полный (...) мир», мир не Ньютона, а Декарта, в котором любой акт оказывает сильное воздействие на окружение. При этом человеческое мышление не изменилось, что чревато самыми трагическими катаклизмами. Представляется, что наиболее убедительной является первая часть доклада, которая демонстрирует глубину и глобальность современного кризиса. Вторая часть доклада, предметом которой является критика некоторого расплывчатого конгломерата под именем «современной философии» и декларация «нового Просвещения», заслуживает критики по причине своей синкретичности и стремления соединить несоединимое. Последнюю часть доклада, содержащую практические рекомендации, оценить труднее, поскольку они требуют проверки на практике. Однако предлагаемые решения во многих случаях выглядят едва ли реализуемы- ми, а то и просто утопическими. Вероятно, единственная функция, которую выполняет данный доклад в полной мере, это привлечение внимания общественности к той трудной ситуации, в которой находится современный мир. (shrink)

В статье описываются и оцениваются различные концепции и подходы к рассмотрению феномена информации. Автор подчеркивает важность понятия информации как в анализе современного научного дискурса, так и в исследованиях общественных процессов, явлений и т. п. На основе современных работ в области философии информации поднимается вопрос о понимании самого феномена информации как основополагающего для определения понятия «информация». Рассматривается процесс историко-научной и историкофилософской эволюции понимания феномена информации в отечественной и зарубежной мысли. Акцентируется внимание на более детальной и фундаментальной проработанности понимания природы информации в (...) отечественной литературе. Автором предпринимается попытка рассмотрения ряда современных исследований информации, объединенных под общим названием философии информации. Рассматриваются работы Лучано Флориди, Константина К. Колина и Лю Гана. Делается вывод о том, что, благодаря своим концептуальным отличиям, наиболее перспективной, с точки зрения автора, является модальная теория информации, предлагаемая синологическим подходом как к философскому осмыслению информации, так и к западнофилософской мысли в целом. David Hume's Enquiry concerning Human Understanding is the definitive statement of the greatest philosopher in the English language. His arguments in support of reasoning from experience, and against the "sophistry and illusion"of religiously inspired philosophical fantasies, caused controversy in the eighteenth century and are strikingly relevant today, when faith and science continue to clash. The Enquiry considers the origin and processes of human thought, reaching the stark conclusion that we can have no ultimate understanding of the physical world, or indeed (...) our own minds. In either sphere we must depend on instinctive learning from experience, recognizing our animal nature and the limits of reason. Starting with service robotics and industrial robotics, this paper aims to suggest philosophical reflections about the relationship between body and machine, between man and technology in our contemporary world. From the massive use of the cell phone to the robots which apparently “feel” and show emotions like humans do. From the wearable exoskeleton to the prototype reproducing the artificial sense of touch, technological progress explodes to the extent of embodying itself in our nakedness. Robotics, indeed, is inspired by biology in (...) order to develop a new kind of technology affecting human life. This is a bio-robotic approach, which is fulfilled in the figure of the cyborg and consequently in the loss of human nature. Today, humans have reached the possibility to modify and create their own body following their personal desires. But what is the limit of this achievement? We review different conceptions of the set-theoretic multiverse and evaluate their features and strengths. In Sect. 1, we set the stage by briefly discussing the opposition between the ‘universe view’ and the ‘multiverse view’. Furthermore, we propose to classify multiverse conceptions in terms of their adherence to some form of mathematical realism. In Sect. 2, we use this classification to review four major conceptions. Finally, in Sect. 3, we focus on the distinction between actualism and potentialism with regard to the (...) universe of sets, then we discuss the Zermelian view, featuring a ‘vertical’ multiverse, and give special attention to this multiverse conception in light of the hyperuniverse programme introduced in Arrigoni-Friedman :77–96, 2013). We argue that the distinctive feature of the multiverse conception chosen for the hyperuniverse programme is its utility for finding new candidates for axioms of set theory. (shrink)

Agent-centered constraints on harming hold that some harmful upshots of our conduct cannot be justified by its generating equal or somewhat greater benefits. In this paper I argue that all plausible theories of agent-centered constraints on harming are undermined by the likelihood that our actions will have butterfly effects, or cause cascades of changes that make the world dramatically different than it would have been. Theories that impose constraints against only intended harming or proximally caused harm have unacceptable implications for (...) choices between more and less harmful ways of securing greater goods. This leaves as plausible only theories that impose constraints against causing some unintended distal harms. But, I argue, given the distal harms our actions are likely to cause through their butterfly effects, these theories entail that any way of sustaining our lives is overwhelmingly likely to involve unjustified killing, and that we are therefore morally required either to allow ourselves to waste away or kill ourselves. This book is a philosophical exploration of the theoretical causes behind the collapse of classical cybernetics. Alcibiades Malapi-Nelson advances the idea that the cybernetic understanding of the nature of a machine entails ontological and epistemological consequences that create both material and theoretical conundrums. He proposes that, given our current state of materials, research, and practices, there might be a way for cybernetics to flourish. The book starts with a historical treatment of cybernetics, and proceeds with a philosophical explanation of its (...) collapse-emphasizing the work of Turing, Ashby and von Neumann-and connects it with the emerging technologies carrying its signature. The transhumanist metaphysics of both cybernetics and NBIC is then unveiled. Finally, avenues of research that may allow these technologies to circumvent the cybernetic fate are indicated.
