It is frequently claimed that we can learn very little, if anything, about the aesthetic character of an artwork on the basis of testimony. Such disparaging assessments of the epistemic value of aesthetic testimony contrast markedly with our acceptance of testimony as an important source of knowledge in many other areas. There have, however, been a number of challenges to this orthodoxy of late; from those who seek to deny that such a contrast exists as well as attempts by those (...) who accept the distinction to provide an explanation and defence of the contrast. In Section I, I outline a little of the nature and history of the debate over aesthetic testimony. Section II, focuses on the opposing positions on aesthetic testimony, optimism and pessimism, and takes steps to clarify what exactly is at issue between them. In Section III, I survey considerations which have been adduced in favour of pessimism ranging from brute appeal to intuition to complex argumentation before turning in Section IV, to look at motivations for optimism. Finally, in Section V, I consider some alternative views which claim that, for a variety of reasons, it is a mistake to construe the debate over aesthetic testimony as concerned with the epistemic standing of aesthetic beliefs formed on the basis of testimony. Im ersten Hauptteil widmet sich Kant der ästhetischen Beurteilung der Zweckmäßigkeit der Formen der Natur für unsere Erkenntnisvermögen. Im zweiten Hauptteil erörtert er die Frage, inwieweit wir der Natur selbst eine objektive Zweckmäßigkeit ihrer Formen zuschreiben können. Im Zentrum stehen dabei die Begriffe des Naturzwecks und der sich selbst organisierenden Wesen. Auf eine teleologische Beurteilung der Natur kann dort nicht (...) verzichtet werden, wo wir die Form des Gegenstandes durch den Naturmechanismus nicht erklären können. Die Edition dokumentiert den Wortlaut der zweiten Originalausgabe von 1793. Sie verzeichnet alle relevanten Lesarten der ersten und dritten Ausgabe sowie die wichtigsten Konjekturen früherer Herausgeber. Die Einleitung des Herausgebers führt in die Themenstellung der Schrift ein und diskutiert einige in der Literatur kontrovers erörterte Lehrstücke. Die ausführlichen Sachanmerkungen weisen Zitate und verdeckte Anspielungen nach. Dieser 2. Auflage ist als Beilage der Text der von Kant verworfenen ersten Einleitung in die KdU beigegeben, die in der Forschung als ein wichtiges Dokument gilt für die Erschließung des nachgelassenen Opus postumum. Many philosophers have thought that colours or flavours or values are in some way less objective than shape or mass or motion. This paper explores the approach to capturing this thought that is based on the idea of ‘ response-dependence ’. First, it is argued that the conceptions of response-dependence developed by Mark Johnston, Philip Pettit and Crispin Wright fail to capture this thought adequately. Then, the rest of the paper proposes an alternative conception, based in part on Kit Fine's (...) notion of " essence ", which looks more likely to succeed in capturing the thought adequately.
