In this work, first published in two volumes in 1890 and 1894, Erwin Rohde, the German classical scholar and friend of Nietzsche, describes the ancient Greek cult of souls and establishes the sources of the belief in the immortality of the soul, exploring its relation to life both before and after death. This belief in the survival of the soul already existed in the earliest Greek writings, but when and from where did it originate? In Volume 1 Rohde examines belief (...) in the soul as it appears in Homeric poetry and within local cults, and finds that the idea of an afterlife is already represented in different forms in the works of Hesiod and Aeschylus. He also discusses burial rites and the Eleusinian Mysteries. Psyche, reissued here in the 1898 edition, remains a standard reference work on this topic. (shrink)

Die mit Kleinbuchstaben seitenweise gezahlten Randbemerkungen sind im Fussnotenapparat abgedruckt. Sie erstrecken sich zeitlich von 1929 bis in die letzten Lebensjahre. Die Fortsetzung von "Sein und Zeit", die Antwort auf die Seinsfrage selbst unter dem Titel "Zeit und Sein", wurde von Heidegger im Sommersemester 1927 in einem zweiten Anlauf (...) in der Vorlesung "Die Grundprobleme der Phanomenologie" (GA 24) vorgetragen. "Sein und Zeit" als Durchbruchs- und Hauptwerk Martin Heideggers ist zugleich das Durchgangswerk zur zweiten, der ereignisgeschichtlichen Ausarbeitung der Seinsfrage, zuerst in "Beitrage zur Philosophie (Vom Ereignis)" (GA 65). Von dem franzosischen Philosophen Emmanuel Levinas stammt die Einschatzung, dass in "Sein und Zeit" "die Phanomenologie vielleicht an das Hochste gelangt ist", dass "Sein und Zeit" "ein Buch (ist), das man nur mit dem 'Phaidros' von Plato, mit der 'Kritik der reinen Vernunft' von Kant und mit der 'Phanomenologie des Geistes" von Hegel vergleichen kann". Continental philosophy of science has developed alongside mainstream analytic philosophy of science. But where continental approaches are inclusive, analytic philosophies of science are not?excluding not merely Nietzsche?s philosophy of science but Gödel?s philosophy of physics. As a radicalization of Kant, Nietzsche?s critical philosophy of science puts science in question and Nietzsche?s critique of the methodological foundations of classical philology bears on science, particularly evolution as well as style (in art and science). In addition to the critical (in Mach, Nietzsche, Heidegger (...) but also Husserl just to the extent that continental philosophy of science tends to depart from a reflection on the crisis of foundations), other continental philosophies of science include phenomenology (Husserl, Bachelard, Merleau?Ponty, etc.) and hermeneutics (Heidegger, Gadamer, Heelan, etc.), especially incorporating history of science (Nietzsche, Mach, Duhem, Butterfield, Feyerabend, etc.). Examples are drawn from the philosophy of sciences (chemistry, geology, and biology) other than physics. (shrink)
