Abstract
Infallibilism is the view that knowledge must entail the inconceivability of error. This paper argues that externalists attempt to solve the Gettier problem in a way that is infallibilist. Following Descartes, they assume that if you could have been wrong, you do not have knowledge. In line with this, they take the presence of an accidentally true belief, which is definitive of the Gettier cases, as an instance of the possibility of mistake. However, this solution is incompatible with fallibilism, a widely held view in contemporary epistemology according to which we have knowledge even if we could have been mistaken
