Nationalism and internationalism in sport: theoretical concepts and practical demonstration

Abstract

The article analyzes the theoretical concepts of nationalism and internationalism in international sport. It is shown, that their practical implications depend on a number of objective and subjective factors, primarily on the system of socio­political, economic and cultural relations between the various countries in which it is included. Emphasizes that nationalism transforms sports in competition for prestige among nations. For many decades, the sport was seen as part of the global confrontation between two political systems. It is shown that the value attached to sporting successes in each country, leading to a concentration in the field of financial and political resources of science and modern technology. Therefore, in international sport is, on the one hand, the superpower, that has the best infrastructure, technology and science, and the other poor countries that do not have the basic necessities of sports equipment. Questions of nationalism in sport are also considered in the context of nation­building. In this regard, we discuss various types of nationalism: ethnic, civic and social. Noted that the construction of national identities through sport associated with attempts to understand the nature of global sports culture. Based on the analysis of concepts of sports nationalism noted that it is a distinct political overtones, is closely associated with ideology and beyond especially sporting events. Emphasizes that the main directions and ways to improve the cultural values associated with international sport internationalism in sport and the humanization of the cultural environment in which it operates.
