exemplarist virtue theory radical kind of virtue theory, “exemplarism” – foundational, grounded in exemplars of moral goodness advantage of theory ‐ what makes a good person good is not given a priori, but determined empirically moral theory, abstract structure ‐ simplifying, systematizing, and justifying moral beliefs and practices moral theory, unlike a street map ‐ What we seek to understand, altered by process of seeking to understand it moral theory, explaining moral beliefs and practices ‐ leading to revising such practices structure of some moral theories ‐ Kantian moral theory, neo‐Aristotelian moral theory and utilitarianism exemplarism, construction of theory ‐ direct reference to exemplars of moral goodness definition, through direct reference ‐ a contingent truth exemplarist virtue theory ‐ Aristotle's definition of phronesis, an essential demonstrative reference
