The Source of "The Little Animal Yielding Tiger" and Its Exotic Sentiment

Abstract

Qing Dynasty novel repeatedly drive out small animal tiger, tiger kill the story. Tang, Ming and who has written novels eat small mammals tiger to tiger fake tiger bake lining true prestige, often the "big beast" as a reference, highlighting the small animal is a unique place. Concern is not ancient, but the motif was heralded by spectacular plume of "exotic scenery." Tribute beast far country, is considered to be barbarians to protest to challenge the Central Plains, the Ming dynasty was the performance of said services to the Central Plains. "Strange" as a prominent "tiger" in the "small animal" in front of the cowardly, the performance of PU national consciousness of the twists and turns. The plot that a tiger yielded or even killed by a little animal often appears in literature of Qing dynasty. It can be traced as well to Tang, Song, Yuan arid Ming stories in which the little animal may stand for the lion, while the tiger would signify the "bigger animals" such as tiger, leopard, bear and elephant. What should be pay more attention is not its thematic long history, but the exotic sentiment behind the motif. While in ancient years rare animals came from foreign countries could be an aggressive stance of strength display, in Ming dynasty, however, they are more often represented as a subjection to the central empire. In the context above, we may read out some national awareness of Pu Songlin, the author of Liao-Zhai-Zhi -Yi in which the little animal story is concluded
