Abstract

The essence of the hermeneutics of Augustine lays the foundation in his De doctrina christiana is more communitarian than epistemological. Providing an opportunity for teaching and learning, for discussing and understanding, hermeneutic activity shows itself to be an ideal moment for the practice of charity ; the human mediation which it brings into play and frames within a certain ethical structure hold the power to strengthen communal bonds. De doctrina christiana seeks to promote this double economy of meaning and love. This attempt is made in an original manner, which, as I shall argue, finds its reflection and synthesis in the prologue.
