As the epigraph suggests, in west-ern ethnopsychology the ultimate responsibility for the dream is understood to lie within the mind of the dreamer. Despite the ap-parent alterity of dream experience, it is seen as an expression of the indi-vidual's unconscious desires and drives. For Freud, this assumption opened the door to the study of the dreamwork and a focus on mechanisms of dream formation: condensation, displacement, symbolism, secondary elabo-ration, and so on (Freud 1900).
