Color Geometry - Or Color Grammar?

Meinong Studies (forthcoming)

Abstract

This article discusses some difficulties of the theory of color propounded by Meinong in his Re-marks on the Color Solid and the Mixture Law of 1903. First, I argue that Meinong’s geometrical approach faces at least three sets of difficulties related to the following assumptions: colors pos-sess a “nature” that can be grasped through intuition; they are separated from each other by continua in color space; there are an infinite number of a priori relations between colors. Second, I confront the geometrical approach with Wittgenstein’s grammatical approach, contending that the latter escapes these difficulties.
