Abstract

The expression « Scientific revolution » which was first used in the second half of the Eighteenth Century conjures up both the idea of radical innovation and the concern to return to a more original, authentic and justified state of knowledge. Cournot, the author of the first theory of scientific revolutions, nearly a century before Kuhn, threw light on the discontinuous and progressive ways in which man, « there mere tenant of the planet » and the universe make their pact explicit.
