Abstract

Preserved in just one fourteenth-century manuscript, the Middle-High German translation of Thomas Aquinas’ Summa theologiae has until now been considered a text of very poor quality that had no circulation in the Middle Ages. This study offers evidence of a first, important example of the reception of this text: the Little Book of the Truth, in which the author, the German Dominican Henry Suso, uses verbatim quotations from the Middle-High German Summa theologiae in defending Eckhart’s thought against the papal condemnation
