Abstract

After 1900 in connection with the rediscovery of Mendel's paper, scientists began to describe the history of Mendel's precursors in plant hybridization. In this paper attention is drawn to Mendel's contemporary, Rudolf Geschwind, who in 1864 described the history of plant hybridization in his paper on the application of artificial fertilization in breeding new varieties of forest trees. The approach of Geschwind is compared with the research of Mendel. Geschwind's section on the history of plant hybridization appears as an appendix to this article
