Obligation of Non-maleficence and Female Circumcision in Africa: A Moral Discourse
Abstract
:The paper attempts to expose the different types of female circumcision in Africa. The reasons for and the geographical spread of FC in Africa were indicated. The physical and psychological implications of FC were also highlighted. The principle of non-maleficence was used to analyze the role of physicians who carryout FC operations on the grounds that they make the practice “safe”. And due to the strong cultural implications associated with the practice of FC in Africa, symbolic form of FC was suggested in place of actual FC
