Abstract

This short essay was written in the context of a theological symposium on revelation. In focusing on the Indian religious traditions I have tried to avoid the persisting nineteenth century categories of theisms and revelations, and instead have discussed multi-optional and multilayered positions as contrasted with the ages-old preoccupation with singular, unique meanings. In today’s shifting attitudes towards overarching meanings it appears that both the adherents of monoscriptural systems and of the endless variety of options tend to express inadequacy in the long run
