Abstract

Die vorliegende Abhandlung rekonstruiert Nietzsches Auseinandersetzung mit dem Stroizismus und bietet erstmals eine umfassende Analyse seiner argumentativen Strategien. Zugleich eröffnet sie einen weiten kulturhistorischen Horizont: durch zahlreiche Belgstellen zu stoishen Konzepten in Werken Ciceros und Senecas und durch Seitenbliche auf Positionen Kant und Schopenhauers. Einserseits übt Nietzsche Kritik an der maskenhaft-unauthentischen Attitüde eines stoischen Heroismus, am Verlust emotionaler Erlebnisintensität und intellektueller Sensibilität durch eine Erstarrung in stoischer Ataraxia sowie Postulat eines 'naturgemäßen Lebens', das er auf einen lantenen Willen zur Macht hin transparent macht. Anderseits verbindet Nietzsche das stoische Ethos der Selbstdisziplin sogar mit seinem Konzept des 'freien Geistes' und betont seine Bedutung als Mowens der Kulturentwicklung und als Therapeutikum gegen die Décadence.This essay reconstructs Nietzsche's discussion of stoicism and for the first time presents a comprehensive analysis of his argumentation strategies. Numerous quotations from stoic concepts in the work of Cicero and Seneca and references to Kant and Schopenhauer provide us with a broad picture of the European cultural history. One the one hand, Nietzsche criticizes the lack of authenticity in the attitude of stoic heroism, as well as the loss of emotional intensity and intellectual sensitivity through petrification in stoic ataraxia, and he shows in which respect the stoic claim to 'natural life' is influenced by a latent 'will to power'. On the other hand, Nietzsche combines the stoic ethos of self-discipline even with his idea of the 'free spirit' and emphasizes its importance as a catalyst for cultural development and as a therapeutic measure against decadence.
