Studying Feminist Film Theory

Abstract

Cinematic entertainment is more than 'mere escapism'. Cinema practices are industrial products. They come into existence within institutional conditions and practices. This book introduces media and film students to the background theorists and texts that have informed a gender-critical approach to cinema studies. Case studies from popular cinema and independent movies are used to illustrate key points and the author celebrates some "unexpected heroes" of feminist cinema.
