Abstract

many scholars have had interesting things to say about the relationship between Adam Smith's and David Hume's theories of sympathy. The diversity of angles taken in these discussions demonstrates how fertile a topic of investigation this relationship is. There have been excellent discussions of the role that sympathy plays in each philosopher's account of moral judgment,1 of how sympathy functions in their attacks on egoism,2 of how to situate their theories in relation to the concept of empathy,3 of how to situate their theories in relation to contemporary accounts of accessing other people's minds,4 of Smith's criticism of Hume,5 and of Hume's criticism of Smith.6 The present paper belongs alongside studies of...
