Abstract

C. G. Jung may be considered as one of the forerunners of humanistic psychology. The scientific character of his work has often been called into question. To give a critical appraisal of a work a norm is obviously needed. Yet it appears that in psychology no such generally accepted norm exists to appraise the „œuvre” of Jung. It is therefore necessary for the critic not only to reflect about his own criteria for assessing the author but also about the author's own critical approach to science. Such reflection which is in fact part of a critical study of the Analytical-Psychological model of the ontogenesis, brings to light the importance of - among others - the following elements : Science as service of life ; psychology as a science necessarily involving the self ; Analytical Psychology's selfperception as a medical and practical psychology' in contrast with experimental psychology ; Jung's view on the necessity of philosophical presuppositions
