Abstract

In this article the author focuses on the mitzvah of Amalek, more explicitly on the halachic aspects of the interpretations, meaning how the mitzvah has been understood according to Jewish law. The article consists of a short presentation of the most important bible passages which mention Amalek. These are the basis of Jewish interpretations of Amalek. Amalek is seen as the as the arch enemy of Israel. He is a relative of Esau, and therefore he is also associated with Edom, who are symbols of the oppression against Israel.
