Abstract

This paper seeks to explore Gennadios Scholarios’ views on sorrow. Scholarios studied and summarized Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologiae, the annotation of which occurs in “OEuvres complètes de Georges Scholarios”, Vol.VI). Scholarios’ treatise on sorrow is a chapter included to the total writings and corresponds to the exact Aquinas’ Prima Secundae’s chapters. Scholarios’ reception of Aquinas’ ethics is approached through the concupiscible passions where sorrow is included. The comparison of the two texts provides useful edification, firstly as to the differences and convergences emerging, and secondly as to the reasons why Scholarios chose to emphasize on Aquinas. This method pointed out Scholarios’ critical perspective towards the passion of sorrow, a conclusion that asserts the autonomy of his thought.
