Abstract

According to the official discourse in China, the May 4 Movement of 1919 opened the process of modernization in Chinese history. In those years, Chinese intellectuals introduced some new concepts, such as democracy and science, to accelerate society’s development following this encounter with western modernization. At the same time, American philosopher John Dewey visited China, enabling more Chinese to know his ideas.
