In monolingual contexts, speakers take stances by using a variety of linguistic forms, some of which are sociolinguistically salient. In bilingual contexts, speakers have an added stance resource: language choice. In one of his last papers (“Radio Talk,” 1981), Erving Goffman reflected on two themes that will be useful for this chapter.
